Vampire Survivors Guide: 9 Tips to Survive Longer
Vampire Survivors looks simple — you only move — until minute 20 buries you. These 9 tips turn scattered gems into a snowball build that can actually reach 30 minutes.
1. Move With Purpose and Farm Gems Early
Your weapons fire on their own in Vampire Survivors, so your whole job is positioning. Walk in wide loops, not tight circles, so you keep collecting the blue experience gems enemies drop.
Level-ups are your power curve. Every level offers three choices — take a new weapon early, then upgrade what you have instead of spreading levels too thin. A level-5 main weapon beats five level-1 weapons.
Chase elites and mini-bosses when you can do it safely: they drop treasure chests with upgrades, gold, and sometimes the evolution you need.
2. Build Around Evolutions, Not Random Picks
You can carry six weapons and six passive items. Most weapons evolve when they are fully upgraded, you hold their matching passive, and you open a chest after minute 10. Plan pairs from the start:
| Weapon | Passive Needed | Evolves Into |
|---|---|---|
| Whip | Hollow Heart | Bloody Tear |
| Magic Wand | Empty Tome | Holy Wand |
| King Bible | Spellbinder | Unholy Vespers |
| Garlic | Pummarola | Soul Eater |
| Axe | Candelabrador | Death Spiral |
| Santa Water | Attractorb | La Borra |
Garlic is a beginner favourite for a reason: it melts early waves in Mad Forest and lets you walk through weak enemies while you learn. King Bible gives you a protective ring that makes mid-game breathing room.
3. Stay Alive: Armour, Magnet and Movement
Tip 4: take Attractorb early. A bigger pickup range means fewer risky dives for gems, and it pairs with Santa Water. Tip 5: never stand still — most deaths come from getting boxed in, so always move toward open space, even if it means leaving gems behind for a few seconds.
Floor Chicken heals you — save braziers and light sources for when you actually need the drop. If a swarm pins you, cut through the thinnest side instead of pushing into the densest pack.
Like the lean-deck lesson in our Slay the Spire guide, focus wins: a smaller, stronger build outlives a pile of half-upgraded extras.
4. Spend Coins on PowerUps That Help Every Run
Tip 6: between runs, spend gold in the PowerUp menu. Start with Might, Armor, Max Health, Recovery, Move Speed and Magnet — they help every character. Then add Area, Duration, Speed and Cooldown support as your builds grow.
Tip 7: pick a stage that fits your goal. Mad Forest is the balanced starter. Inlaid Library is a long horizontal corridor that is great for focused builds and gold farming. Dairy Plant and Gallo Tower are tighter and tougher — save them until your PowerUps are rolling.
For build-crafting fun between runs, our Balatro guide rewards the same synergy thinking, and our Hades guide is the natural next step if you love repeat runs that get stronger.
5. The Last 10 Minutes: Control the Swarm
Tip 8: by minute 20 your build should be nearly finished — an evolved weapon or two, passives matched, and one defensive layer such as Armour, Laurel if you unlock it, or strong knockback. Stop experimenting and start kiting in one consistent direction.
Tip 9: at minute 30 on a standard stage, Death arrives. Reaching 30 minutes is the clear for most stages — surviving Death itself is an advanced challenge, not the normal goal. Count a 30-minute finish as a win and bank the gold.
Playing on a Nintendo Switch or with an Xbox Wireless Controller on PC, keep sessions short at first — the loop is designed for quick, repeatable runs. Our Celeste guide is another great pick for short, skill-building sessions.
Your First-Win Checklist
- Loop wide, collect gems, and level one main weapon first.
- Draft weapon + passive pairs that can evolve.
- Take Attractorb early and keep moving toward open space.
- Open chests from elites — especially after minute 10.
- Invest gold in Might, Armor, Health, Recovery and Magnet.
- Finish your build by minute 20 and kite to 30 minutes.
