Slay the Spire Guide: 9 Tips to Climb the Spire

Most runs die from greedy card picks, not hard bosses. This Slay the Spire guide shows you how to build a focused deck, pick safe routes, and climb one calm floor at a time.

1–2. Start Small: Neow, Skips, and a Lean Deck

Slay the Spire is a deck-building roguelike: you climb three Acts, fight with cards drawn from your own deck, and add one card after most fights. Every card you add also dilutes your best cards, so the strongest beginner habit is simple — you are allowed to skip the card reward. Take a card only if it fixes a problem you have right now.

At Neow at the start, pick the bonus you understand best: extra max HP or gold are calm, safe choices for new players. Then spend Act 1 solving damage first. You need reliable attacks before the first Elite, or hallway fights will tax your HP every floor. If you love focused, run-based games, our Hades beginner guide teaches the same one-run-at-a-time mindset.

3. Pick Your Climber: The Four Characters

Start with the Ironclad while you learn. His healing relic, Burning Blood, forgives early mistakes. Add the Silent for poison and shivs, the Defect for orb-based Frost and Lightning, and the Watcher for stance-changing once the basics feel calm.

Character Core Idea Beginner Tip
Ironclad Strength, big attacks, self-heal Best first pick — heal after each fight
Silent Poison, shivs, card draw Stack poison, then defend patiently
Defect Orbs: Lightning, Frost, Plasma Frost orbs are quiet, steady defense
Watcher Wrath and Calm stances Exit Wrath before the enemy attacks

One character, many runs beats four characters played once each. Learn one deck deeply first.

4–5. Read the Map Before You Climb

Open the map at the start of every Act and plan backwards from the boss. Count the Elites, Rest Sites, and Shops on each path. A good beginner route takes one or two Elites in Act 1 when your deck is strong, visits a Shop with 150+ gold, and always passes a Rest Site shortly before the boss.

At Rest Sites, upgrading a key card usually beats healing — unless you would die in the next two fights. Upgrade damage and block cards you play every combat first. Potions are part of the plan too: hold a strong potion for an Elite or boss instead of spending it on a hallway fight you can already survive. That pacing lesson pairs well with our Balatro guide, where saving resources for boss blinds wins runs the same way.

6–7. Build Around Relics, Not Wishes

Relics are permanent passive bonuses, and great runs bend around the relics they actually find — not the build they hoped for. Got extra energy? Expensive cards become good. Found strong block relics? A slower, defensive plan becomes safe. Read every new relic, then re-read your deck and ask what it now does better.

Remove basic Strikes at Shops when you can afford it, and thin the deck as the run goes on. A lean deck draws its best cards more often — the same focus-over-bloat lesson behind our Celeste guide and our Hollow Knight guide: master a small toolkit, then trust it.

Playing Slay the Spire on a Nintendo Switch or with an Xbox Wireless Controller on PC both work beautifully — it is a thinking game, not a reflex game, so play it wherever you are comfortable.

8. Bosses: Solve One Problem at a Time

Each Act boss tests a different skill. Act 1 bosses punish slow decks, so bring burst damage. Act 2 bosses punish weak area damage and poor scaling, so find a way to grow stronger during long fights — Strength, Poison stacks, or Focus. Act 3 bosses punish one-trick decks, so keep a backup plan: if your whole deck is one combo, have potions and block ready for the turn the combo does not arrive.

Watch intent icons every turn. If the enemy is buffing or sleeping, attack freely. If a big hit is coming, block first and damage second — a run saved at 5 HP still counts as a win. Dying with potions unused is the most common beginner loss, so spend them.

9. Your First-Win Checklist

  • Skip card rewards that do not fix a current problem.
  • Plan the whole Act route from the map before floor one.
  • Take 1–2 Act 1 Elites only when your damage is ready.
  • Upgrade at Rest Sites; heal only to survive the next fights.
  • Save one strong potion for every Elite and boss.
  • Remove Strikes at Shops and keep the deck lean.
  • Rebuild your plan around the relics you actually find.

Which Act boss ended your best run so far — and what one card would have saved it?
