Hollow Knight Guide: 9 Tips to Survive Hallownest
One death in Hallownest costs you all your Geo — unless you learn the kingdom's rules fast. This Hollow Knight walkthrough covers Charms, Nail upgrades and boss patterns, so every run teaches you something and the map keeps opening up.
Start in Dirtmouth, and Respect the Bench
You begin with five Masks of health, a worn Old Nail, and a Soul Vessel that fills as you strike enemies. Hold the Focus button to spend 33 Soul and heal one Mask — that trade is the heartbeat of every fight in this guide.
Benches are your checkpoints, save points and Charm-swapping stations all in one, so rest at every new bench you find before pushing deeper. When you fall, your Shade stays where you died holding all your Geo: fight your way back, defeat the Shade, and your money and full Soul Vessel return.
- Buy the map, Quill and Wayward Compass from Iselda's shop in Dirtmouth as soon as you can — knowing where you are is worth more than any early Charm.
- Follow Cornifer's humming in each new area and buy his partial map, then rest at a bench to draw in the rooms you explored.
- Open Stag Stations whenever you find them — fast travel between Dirtmouth, the Forgotten Crossroads and beyond saves hours of backtracking.
Charms and Nail Upgrades: Where Your Power Really Lives
Charms are equippable perks that cost Notches — you start with three Notches and earn more as you explore. Swap them only at benches, and build around how you actually play instead of copying a late-game loadout on day one.
| Upgrade | What It Does | Early Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Wayward Compass (1 Notch) | Shows your position on the map | Buy first — never unequip it while learning an area |
| Gathering Swarm (1 Notch) | A swarm collects loose Geo for you | Excellent early — pays for itself in the Crossroads |
| Longnail (2 Notches) | Extends your Nail's reach | Makes boss spacing far more forgiving |
| Quick Focus (3 Notches) | Heals noticeably faster | A mid-game luxury once you have more Notches |
| Nail upgrades (Nailsmith) | Old Nail grows through Sharpened, Channelled and Coiled stages, each needing Geo and Pale Ore | Upgrade before attempting the City of Tears bosses |
Four Mask Shards combine into one extra Mask, and three Vessel Fragments complete a second Soul Vessel. Both are worth detouring for — one more heal in reserve changes whole boss fights. New to the game entirely? Hollow Knight rewards patience like few adventures do.
Boss Fights: Learn the Pattern, Then Spend Soul Boldly
Every boss in Hallownest is a rhythm lesson. False Knight telegraphs his mace slams and staggers for free hits; Hornet in Greenpath teaches you to dash under her lunges and punish her thread throws; the Mantis Lords reward calm dodging over greedy extra swings.
Use your first attempt at any boss as a scouting run — survive, watch, and note the two or three attacks that actually hit you. Heal only during a boss's stagger or longest recovery animation, never in neutral, and save Soul for a spell like Vengeful Spirit when you need safe ranged damage.
- Downward slashes on enemies and hazards bounce you upward — the "pogo" — and open shortcuts everywhere.
- Red-glowing desperation phases are scripted: when a boss speeds up near the end, play safer, not faster.
- If a fight walls you, leave and explore. A new ability — the Mantis Claw's wall jump or the Mothwing Cloak's dash — usually turns a wall into a doorway.

Explore in Rings: The Hallownest Route That Works
Hallownest opens in ability rings. Clear the Forgotten Crossroads, earn the Mothwing Cloak in Greenpath, take the Mantis Claw from the Fungal Wastes, then ride into the City of Tears — the kingdom's heart and your first real difficulty step.
Later rings ask for the Crystal Heart's super dash in Crystal Peak, Monarch Wings for the double jump, and Isma's Tear before swimming the Royal Waterways' acid. When a path demands an ability you lack, mark the moment mentally and move on — backtracking with new movement is the game working as designed, not wasted time.
Playing on a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode or with an Xbox Wireless Controller on PC, keep your dash and heal buttons somewhere your thumbs can hold a rhythm — boss patterns are muscle memory, and a comfortable grip keeps a long session friendly. Geo Discipline: Never Carry a Fortune Into the Unknown
Geo is lost twice only if you die again before reclaiming your Shade — so spend early and often. Bank big hauls into maps, Stag Station tolls, the Lantern for dark rooms, and Sly's shop stock before attempting a new boss door.
- The Gathering Swarm plus patient clearing of the Crossroads funds your whole early kit.
- Fragile Charms from Leg Eater break on death until upgraded — bench them before boss attempts while they are still fragile.
- Grubs trapped in jars sing when you are close. Freeing them earns steady Geo rewards from the Grubfather back in the Crossroads.
- Relics like Wanderer's Journals and Hallownest Seals are pure selling stock — they have no other use, so trade them to Lemm in the City of Tears without guilt.

Your First-Week Hallownest Checklist
- Buy the map, Quill and Wayward Compass, then clear the Forgotten Crossroads and defeat False Knight.
- Earn the Mothwing Cloak in Greenpath and the Mantis Claw in the Fungal Wastes.
- Equip Gathering Swarm and Longnail, open two Stag Stations, and free every Grub you pass.
- Upgrade your Nail once at the Nailsmith before the City of Tears.
- Scout each boss once before fighting to win — patterns first, glory second.
- Spend Geo before boss doors; reclaim your Shade calmly when you fall.
