Diablo IV Beginner Guide: 9 Tips to Survive Sanctuary

New to Diablo IV? Sanctuary punishes rushed builds and empty flasks — this guide gives you a calm first-week plan, from class pick to your first Nightmare Dungeon.

1. Pick a Class You Will Actually Enjoy

Tip 1: Choose by feel, not by a tier list. Every Diablo IV class can clear the campaign, and you will play it for dozens of hours. Try the opening skills and pick the fantasy you like.

Tip 2: Start on World Tier 1 if you are brand new. It is not a failure setting — it is faster learning, faster loot, and far fewer frustrating deaths while you learn enemy patterns.

If you like learning a world step by step, our Skyrim beginner guide uses the same explore-first approach for another huge open world.

2. The Six Classes at a Glance

Each class has a clear strength. Use this Diablo IV guide table to match a class to how you like to fight, then commit for the campaign instead of restarting every night.

Class Playstyle Beginner Note
Barbarian Melee, multiple weapons Direct and tough; watch positioning
Druid Shapeshifting, nature magic, companions Flexible, slower start
Necromancer Skeletons, blood and shadow magic Minions make learning much calmer
Rogue Fast blades and bows, traps Mobile and rewarding, less forgiving
Sorcerer Fire, ice and lightning spells Huge damage from range, fragile up close
Spiritborn Agile martial arts, spirit guardians (expansion) Fast and fluid if you own Vessel of Hatred

Tip 3: Necromancer and Barbarian are the most forgiving first picks — one brings an army, the other brings staying power.

3. Build Basics: One Spender, One Plan

Early builds fall apart when every button does something different. Keep it simple: one Basic skill to generate your resource, one Core skill that is your main damage, plus a defensive skill and a mobility or escape option.

Tip 4: Put points into passives that support that one Core skill instead of spreading points across five attacks. Tip 5: Use your Evade — that quick dodge on a short cooldown — to leave red circles and boss slams, not just to travel faster.

That focused-build thinking is also the heart of our Hades beginner guide, where one strong attack plan carries a whole run.

4. Loot, Upgrades, and Potions That Save You

Check new gear for your main stat and for bonuses to your Core skill, not just the big item-power number. A slightly lower piece that boosts what you actually cast is often stronger.

  • Tip 6: Visit the Blacksmith to salvage gear you will not wear — those materials fund upgrades — and upgrade your weapon first.
  • Tip 7: Upgrade your Healing Potion at the Alchemist whenever a new tier unlocks, and craft a simple Elixir before dungeons for a small, steady edge.
  • Do the Renown basics in each region: Altars of Lilith, waypoints, and strongholds give lasting account-wide help.

5. Campaign, World Tiers, and What Comes After

Follow the campaign first — it teaches Sanctuary region by region and unlocks your mount along the way. Mix in cellars and side dungeons when you need a level or a break, but do not grind the same dungeon hoping the story gets easier.

Tip 8: After the campaign, step up a World Tier only when your current tier feels comfortable. Higher tiers mean tougher enemies and better rewards, including Sacred and later Ancestral gear, Nightmare Dungeons, and Helltide events.

Tip 9: In endgame activities, play the objective, watch elite affixes, and leave a dungeon that is clearly above you — regrouping with better gear beats repeated deaths. That same judgment call runs through our Elden Ring starter guide.

Your First-Week Sanctuary Checklist

  • Pick a class by feel, start on World Tier 1, and commit.
  • One Basic, one Core, one defensive, one mobility skill.
  • Salvage at the Blacksmith, upgrade your weapon first.
  • Upgrade potions at the Alchemist and use Elixirs before dungeons.
  • Finish the campaign, grab waypoints and Renown, then raise the World Tier.

Which class did you start Sanctuary with — and which boss or elite pack gave you your first real scare?
