Skyrim Beginner Guide: 9 Tips to Survive Tamriel

Your first dragon fight is coming whether you are ready or not. These 9 Skyrim beginner tips fix your build, gold and gear before Tamriel gets rough.

1. Start Strong: Helgen, Riverwood and Your First Stone

Tip 1: in Helgen, follow either Hadvar or Ralof — both routes teach the basics and end in Riverwood, so pick freely and loot everything you can carry. Sell the spare gear, sleep for the Well Rested bonus, and talk to the Riverwood Trader about the Golden Claw.

Tip 2: activate a Standing Stone on the road to Riverwood. Choose the Warrior, Mage or Thief Stone that matches your plans and its matching skills level 20% faster. It is the single easiest early boost in this Skyrim guide — and you can swap stones later.

That Golden Claw quest leads through Bleak Falls Barrow, where you learn your first Word of Power. Like the opening hours in our Elden Ring starter guide, Skyrim rewards players who finish the first dungeon before wandering off.

2. Pick One Build Direction — Then Commit

Tip 3: Skyrim lets you use anything, but beginners who spread perks across ten skills end up weak at everything. Commit to one combat style for your first 20 levels, supported by one crafting skill and one survival skill like Restoration or Sneak.

Playstyle Core Skills Best For
Warrior One-Handed or Two-Handed, Heavy Armor, Smithing Direct fights and dragon battles up close
Mage Destruction, Alteration, Enchanting Area damage and crowd control from range
Stealth Archer Archery, Sneak, Light Armor Huge sneak-attack crits and safe dungeon clears
Spellsword One-Handed, Destruction, Restoration Flexible sword-and-spell problem solving

Race matters less than it looks: Bretons bring strong magic resistance, Nords resist frost, and Orcs get the powerful Berserker Rage ability. Play the race you enjoy looking at — your perks decide your power.

3. Skills, Perks and the Crafting Trio

Tip 4: skills level by use, and every level-up lets you raise Health, Magicka or Stamina plus spend one perk point. Bank a point if the perk you want needs a higher skill level — unspent points are never wasted.

Tip 5: invest in the crafting trio over time. Smithing improves weapons and armor, Enchanting adds effects to gear, and Alchemy brews potions that sell for serious gold. Together they let you build equipment stronger than most dungeon loot.

  • Level Health early if you fight in melee — surviving one extra hit changes every fight.
  • Train with paid trainers up to five times per level when gold allows.
  • Read skill books you find in the world for free skill gains.

4. Dragons, Shouts and Word Walls

Tip 6: after Bleak Falls Barrow, report to Jarl Balgruuf in Whiterun and follow the main quest until dragons start appearing in the wild. Killing a dragon absorbs its soul, and souls unlock the Words of Power you learn at Word Walls in dungeons and mountain peaks.

Your first full Shout, Unrelenting Force, staggers enemies and creates breathing room in any hard fight — use it constantly. For dragon fights, stay near cover when the dragon lands or hovers, heal between breath attacks, and let guards and followers share the damage.

Exploration pays off here the same way it does in Hyrule in our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom guide: the best rewards sit just off the main road, in the ruins you can see from the path.

5. Gold, a House and a Follower Who Carries Everything

Tip 7: gold solves beginner problems. Loot lightweight valuables — gems, jewelry, potions and enchanted gear — over heavy low-value armor, brew potions from gathered ingredients to sell, and complete the Golden Claw and other early quests for quick coin.

Tip 8: save for Breezehome in Whiterun once the Jarl allows it. A house gives you safe, permanent storage — never leave valuables in random barrels, which can reset and delete your items.

Tip 9: bring a follower. Lydia joins you through the Whiterun main quests, and followers carry gear, draw enemy attention and cost nothing. Managing companions well matters in big RPGs — see the same lesson in our Witcher 3 beginner mistakes guide and the repeat-run mindset in our Hades beginner guide.

  • ✅ Clear Bleak Falls Barrow and learn your first Word of Power
  • ✅ Commit perks to one combat style plus one crafting skill
  • ✅ Unlock Unrelenting Force and absorb your first dragon soul
  • ✅ Save toward Breezehome and recruit a follower in Whiterun

Which gave you more trouble on your first playthrough — your first dragon, or the Bleak Falls Barrow boss at the end of the Golden Claw quest?
