AOP3D's Ultimate Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Beginner Guide Part 1: Surviving the Great Sky Island and Landing in Hyrule
Welcome to Hyrule, my friend! Tears of the Kingdom drops you onto floating islands with four brand-new powers and zero hand-holding. This Part 1 guide walks you through the Great Sky Island tutorial, masters Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, and Recall, and gets you safely landed in Hyrule with the paraglider in hand. Buckle up — the sky is only the beginning.
1. Your First Hour: Wake Up and Follow the Light
You start bruised, weaponless, and wearing pajamas on the Great Sky Island — a floating tutorial area you cannot leave until you finish its four shrines. That is by design. Do not rush off the edges looking for Hyrule; the island teaches you everything you need.
Your first job is simple: grab the Purah Pad from the terminal and follow the main objective markers to each shrine. Along the way, smash every pot, crate, and rock you see. The island showers you with early weapons (tree branches, thick sticks, rusty swords), arrows, and food. Cook everything at the cooking pots you find — roasted apples and seared mushrooms restore hearts and never spoil.
- Grab everything that glows or moves. Zonai charges, brightbloom seeds, and fallen branches all matter later.
- Save before every shrine. The game autosaves, but a manual save before a puzzle saves headaches.
- Talk to the Steward Constructs. These friendly robots explain your new powers and hand out free Zonai devices.
2. The Four Powers: What They Do and How to Abuse Them
Tears of the Kingdom's entire design orbits around four arm abilities. Learn them here and the whole game opens up. Here is the quick-reference version:
| Ability | What It Does | Beginner Trick |
|---|---|---|
| Ultrahand | Grab, rotate, and glue objects together into vehicles and contraptions | Stick two logs and a fan together for an instant river raft |
| Fuse | Merge a material onto your weapon, shield, or arrow for big damage boosts | Fuse a boulder to a stick — 25+ damage from literal garbage |
| Ascend | Swim upward through solid ceilings to the surface above | Stuck in a cave? Look for a flat ceiling and Ascend out |
| Recall | Rewind an object's movement through time | Ride falling sky debris back up into the clouds for free |
A fifth ability, Autobuild, unlocks later in the Depths and lets you rebuild saved contraptions instantly. You do not need it for the Sky Island — just know it is coming and save your best builds as favorites.
3. Combat Survival: Everything Breaks, and That Is Fine
Here is the mindset shift every new player needs: weapons are disposable. A tree branch lasts three swings, and that is okay, because Fuse turns trash into treasure. A soldier's broadsword fused with a Moblin horn becomes a weapon that shreds early enemies. A shield fused with a spring launches you skyward for a perfect bullet-time arrow shot.
- Cook before every fight you are worried about. Five hearty radishes in a pot can give you full recovery plus bonus hearts. Skewer meat for attack boosts.
- Use your bow more than your sword. Arrows are plentiful on the Sky Island, and headshots from stealth do double damage.
- Run from red Bokoblins early. No shame. Come back with fused weapons and squash them in seconds.
- Flurry Rush is your best friend. Dodge at the last second (side hop or backflip) and Link unleashes a devastating counter combo.
4. The Shrine Order and the Golden Rule of Stamina
The island's four shrines teach one power each: Ukouh (Ultrahand), In-isa (Fuse), Gutanbac (Ascend), and Nachoyah (Recall). Clear them in the order the quest markers suggest — each shrine's lesson feeds the next. After all four, you earn the paraglider and dive to Hyrule's surface.
Then comes your most important decision: your first four Light of Blessing orbs. Every four shrine orbs buy one Heart Container or one Stamina Vessel. Here is the golden rule: take stamina first. One full extra stamina wheel transforms climbing, gliding, and swimming — and Hyrule is enormous. You can survive with three hearts for a long while; you cannot enjoy the game with a tiny green bar. Grab hearts second.
- Trade orbs at any Goddess Statue — the first one waits in the Temple of Time on the island.
- Open your first Skyview Tower the moment you land — it reveals the regional map and unlocks fast travel.
- Visit Lookout Landing first for the main story, then wander wherever the wind takes you.
5. Landing Checklist: Your First Day in Hyrule
You made it off the island — congratulations! Before you chase the main quest across the map, knock out these early wins:
- Unlock the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower for the Central Hyrule map and fast travel.
- Buy the Hylian armor set at Lookout Landing's shop — cheap, decent defense, and it keeps you from adventuring in your underwear.
- Cook five-ingredient meals. Meat + mushrooms + herbs in bulk; hearty ingredients grant bonus yellow hearts.
- Fuse a Zonai cannon or beam emitter to your shield the first chance you get — walking artillery for the early game.
- Mark everything interesting with the Purah Pad pins. Shrines, stables, and strange towers are your real quest log.
- Save a Zonai wing glider build as an Autobuild favorite once unlocked — your personal airline across Hyrule.
Part 2 will dive deeper: the Depths, the regional phenomena quest order, and turning your Zonai device collection into war machines. Until then — fuse first, ask questions later, and never jump off a sky island without checking what is below. See you in Hyrule, my friend!
