AOP3D's Ultimate Hades Beginner Guide: Escape the Underworld One Run at a Time

You are Zagreus, immortal prince of the Underworld, and you have decided to fight your way to the surface. The Furies, the Bone Hydra, the champions of Elysium, and your own father stand in your way. Every escape attempt ends in death — and every death makes you stronger. Here is how to turn your first doomed runs into a real escape plan.

1. How a Run Actually Works

Each escape attempt starts in the House of Hades and moves through four regions: Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium, and the Temple of Styx. Every chamber ends with a set of doors, and each door shows an icon of its reward — this is the single most important thing for a beginner to learn.

  • Read the doors: pick rewards you actually need — a god's boon symbol, a Daedalus Hammer, a heart for healing, keys, darkness, gemstones, gold, or Charon's shop.
  • Combat basics: you have an Attack, a Special, a Cast (your Bloodstone, which you lodge in enemies and recall), and a Dash. Your dash gives you brief invulnerability frames — dashing through attacks is safer than running from them.
  • Dash-strike is king: dashing then attacking deals bonus damage with most weapons. Get in the habit early.
  • Every region ends with a boss. You cannot skip them. Save some health, and do not burn your Death Defiances on regular rooms if you can help it.

2. The Six Infernal Arms — Pick Your Fighter

You start with the Stygian Blade. Unlock the other five with Chthonic Keys (found as door rewards and in shops). Weapon Aspects — powerful alternate forms — unlock with Titan Blood. Try them all; every weapon can win runs.

Weapon Range Beginner Take
Stygius — Stygian Blade Short Forgiving all-rounder. Dash-strike chains shred early rooms.
Varatha — Eternal Spear Medium Spin attack clears crowds; great reach keeps you safe.
Aegis — Shield of Chaos Short Hold to block from the front. Best defensive pick for new players.
Coronacht — Heart-Seeking Bow Long Power shots from far away; kite everything. Slow but safe.
Malphon — Twin Fists Short Fast, aggressive, high DPS. Demands good dashing.
Exagryph — Adamant Rail Long Rapid-fire gun. Keep moving, keep shooting, melt bosses.

3. Gods, Boons, and Why Rarity Matters

The Olympian gods hand you boons as you climb. Boons come in rarities — Common, Rare, Epic, Heroic, Legendary — and higher rarity means stronger numbers. Legendary and Duo boons (which combine two gods' powers) have special requirements, so grab prerequisite boons when the gods offer them.

  • Attack, Special, Dash, Cast, Call: each god offers a "core" boon for these slots. Pick cores that fit your weapon — Zeus or Dionysus on fast multi-hit weapons, Artemis or Aphrodite on big single hits.
  • Poms of Power: level up your boons. Feed them to the boons doing the most work.
  • Daedalus Hammers: reshape your weapon itself — often the biggest power spike in a run. Take the hammer room almost every time.
  • Chaos boons: trade a short-term penalty for a big long-term boost. Worth it in early chambers.

4. Boss Survival 101

Four bosses stand between you and the surface. Learn one at a time — dying to a boss still earns you darkness, keys, and story progress.

  • Megaera (Tartarus): dash through her instead of away. Her area attacks punish runners who back into corners.
  • The Bone Hydra, Lernie (Asphodel): focus the main head, kill the small heads only when they crowd you, and never stand in the lava pools.
  • Theseus & Asterius (Elysium): kill Asterius the bull first — his charges are deadly and constant. Theseus mostly shoots at range, so the arena is calmer once the bull drops.
  • Hades (Temple of Styx): he has multiple phases with spin attacks, summons, and arena-wide beams. Stay mobile, use the pillars for cover, and save at least one Death Defiance for him.

5. Death Is Progress — Your First 20 Runs Checklist

Between runs, the House of Hades is your power source. Every death funds the next escape:

  • Darkness → Mirror of Night: unlock and max Death Defiance (extra lives per run) and Thick Skin (more max HP) first. Everything else later.
  • Chthonic Keys → weapons: unlock all six Infernal Arms so you can pick the one that fits your mood.
  • Gemstones → House Contractor: unlock keepsake perks, fountains, and room upgrades that make every run easier.
  • Give Nectar to everyone: each NPC returns a keepsake. Cerberus' Spiked Collar (+max HP) and Skelly's Lucky Tooth (an extra Death Defiance) are beginner lifesavers.
  • Titan Blood → Aspects: once you beat bosses reliably, Aspects unlock whole new playstyles — your runs will never feel the same again.
  • Once you escape: the Pact of Punishment lets you add Heat (difficulty modifiers) for new rewards. The game is just getting started.

Bottom line: you will die. A lot. But unlike most roguelikes, Hades rewards every single death with story, currency, and permanent power. Keep dashing, keep dying, and one day you will look back at the Underworld from the surface. Good luck, prince.
