Balatro Guide: 9 Tips to Build Winning Hands

One more hand can turn a busted run into a jackpot — Balatro scores poker hands with Jokers, leveled hands and wild card tricks. This Balatro guide gives you 9 friendly tips to build winning hands, dodge Boss Blinds and win your first run.

How a Run Works: Chips × Mult Wins Blinds

Every hand you play scores Chips multiplied by Mult, so a hand worth 30 Chips at 4 Mult scores 120. Grow both numbers and scores explode — that single idea drives every tip in this guide.

A run climbs through 8 Antes. Each Ante has a Small Blind, a Big Blind and a Boss Blind with a mean twist, and you usually get 4 hands and 3 discards per round to beat the target score. Win Ante 8 and the run is yours; Endless mode lets a great build keep going.

  • Tip 1 — Discard with a plan: discards are free hand upgrades. Throw away off-suit, low cards that do not build your target hand.
  • Tip 2 — Commit to one or two hand types: a focused build beats a little of everything, every time.

Balatro runs beautifully on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, and like our Hades beginner guide, it rewards players who learn one run at a time.

Know Your Hands: Base Scores at Level 1

Planet cards raise a hand's level, adding Chips and Mult every time you play it. Here is what each hand is worth before any leveling:

Poker Hand Base Chips × Mult Build Note
Pair 10 × 2 Easiest to level; great with the right Jokers
Two Pair 20 × 2 Reliable early, easy to find
Three of a Kind 30 × 3 Strong once the deck is thinned
Straight 30 × 4 Loves discards that hunt connectors
Flush 35 × 4 One-suit decks make this a monster
Full House 40 × 4 Pair Jokers feed it twice
Four of a Kind 60 × 7 Rare, huge, worth building around
Straight Flush 100 × 8 The dream hand — plan for it late

Tip 3 — Level the hand you actually play: buy Planet cards for your main hand first. A level 6 Flush quietly outscores a level 1 Straight Flush you almost never make.

Jokers: Your Real Build Lives Here

You start with 5 Joker slots, and Jokers trigger left to right — order matters. Put flat +Mult Jokers early and ×Mult Jokers last so the multiplier lands on the biggest number.

  • Suit Jokers: Greedy, Lusty, Wrathful and Gluttonous Jokers add +3 Mult for each scored Diamond, Heart, Spade or Club — perfect for a one-suit Flush build.
  • Hand Jokers: Jolly Joker pays +8 Mult when your hand contains a Pair, and its cousins reward Two Pair, Three of a Kind and more.
  • Retriggers: Mime retriggers every card held in hand, and Baron pays ×1.5 Mult for each King held in hand — hold Kings, score twice.
  • Copiers: Blueprint copies the Joker to its right. Park it beside your strongest effect and double the fun.

Tip 4 — Synergy beats rarity: a common Joker that feeds your hand type outearns a flashy rare that does nothing for your build. Sell passengers without mercy.

Level, Enhance, and Thin Your Deck

Tarot cards reshape your deck between rounds. The Hanged Man destroys up to 2 cards — use it on low off-suit cards so your good cards show up more often. Death converts one card into another, and The Fool hands you a free copy of the last Tarot or Planet card you used.

  • Bonus cards add +30 Chips when scored; Mult cards add +4 Mult.
  • Glass cards pay ×2 Mult but can shatter — thrilling, fragile, worth it late.
  • Steel cards pay ×1.5 Mult while held in hand; Gold cards earn $3 if held at round's end.
  • Wild cards count as every suit, gluing Flushes and Straight Flushes together.

Tip 5 — A smaller deck is a stronger deck: every weak card you remove raises the odds your enhanced, high-value cards arrive together. Deck thinning is the quiet engine behind most winning runs — the same patience our Celeste guide teaches for hard climbs.

Money Discipline and Boss Blind Survival

Dollars buy Jokers, packs and rerolls — and holding money pays. You earn $1 of interest for every $5 you hold, up to $5 per round, so keeping $25 banked quietly funds your late game.

  • Tip 6 — Bank $25 before you splurge: interest first, shopping second, until a must-buy Joker appears.
  • Tip 7 — Read the Boss before the round: The Psychic forces 5-card hands, The Needle allows only 1 hand, The Plant debuffs face cards, and The Flint halves your base Chips and Mult.
  • Tip 8 — Skipping has a price and a prize: skipping a Small or Big Blind earns a Tag with a real bonus — skip only when the Tag beats the shop visit.

Boss fights reward preparation over panic — exactly the lesson in our Cuphead boss guide and our Hollow Knight guide.

Your First-Win Checklist

  • Pick one or two hand types by Ante 2 and level them with Planet cards.
  • Order Jokers left to right: +Mult first, ×Mult last.
  • Destroy weak cards, enhance your scorers, chase one suit if Flush is the plan.
  • Hold $25 for interest; reroll only with a plan.
  • Read every Boss Blind and rebuild the round around its rule.

Tip 9 — Lose forward: every busted run unlocks new Jokers, decks and knowledge. Note which synergy carried you furthest and chase it next run.
