Monster Hunter Wilds Guide: 9 Tips to Hunt Better
Monster Hunter Wilds is won before the fight — the right weapon, a hot meal, and one well-aimed Focus Strike on a wound can topple a giant. This guide makes your first hunts friendly and successful.
1. Find Your Weapon in the Training Area
All 14 weapon types are viable — the best one is the one whose rhythm you actually enjoy. Spend 20 minutes testing before your first real hunt.
- Forgiving starters: Sword & Shield (fast, can use items with weapon out), Long Sword (mobile counters), Bow (safe range, coatings), and Hammer (simple, stuns monsters).
- Learn one full loop: every weapon has a core combo, a defensive move, and a big payoff attack. Master those three before chasing advanced tech.
- Carry two weapons: Wilds lets your Seikret carry a second weapon — pair a main with a different element or a ranged backup for flying monsters.
- Do not chase meta lists: a comfortable weapon you hit with beats a top-tier weapon you whiff with, every hunt.

2. Wounds and Focus Mode: Your Damage Engine
Hitting the same body part opens a glowing wound. Focus Mode lets you aim precisely — and a Focus Strike on a wound deals heavy damage and can topple the monster.
| System | What It Does | Beginner Habit |
|---|---|---|
| Wounds | Weak points that glow red in Focus Mode | Keep attacking one part instead of spraying hits everywhere |
| Focus Strike | Special attack that pops wounds | Save it for a wound, ideally when the monster is still or turning |
| Offset Attacks | Heavy moves that can clash with a monster attack | Learn your weapon's offset timing on easy monsters first |
| Power Clash | Blocking certain attacks triggers a struggle | Guaranteed opening if you win it — practice with shield weapons |
Watch the part, not the whole monster. Focused damage breaks parts too, and broken parts mean extra rewards at the results screen.
3. Prep Like a Hunter: Meals, Items, and Your Seikret
Most failed hunts were lost at camp, not in the field. Build this routine until it is automatic.
- Eat before every hunt: a meal's health, stamina, and skill buffs (like insurance against a faint) are the cheapest upgrade in the game.
- Restock the essentials: Potions and Mega Potions, a Farcaster for emergency escapes, traps and Tranq Bombs if you plan to capture, and hot/cold drinks where the weather demands them.
- Ride your Seikret smart: it auto-runs to your marked target while you sharpen, heal, and gather — and calling it mid-fight is a safe way to reposition and recover.
- Bring your Palico: your feline companion heals, distracts, and gathers. Set its support moves to match your weakness, not just damage.

4. Hunt Smarter: Weather, Weaknesses, and Capturing
Wilds' seamless lands change with weather and seasons, and monsters change with them. A little homework pays in minutes saved.
- Check the monster field guide: elemental weaknesses, breakable parts, and recommended gear are listed in-game — match your element to the monster, not your outfit.
- Use the environment: falling boulders, vine traps, and hazards marked on your map deal real damage. Lure, do not chase.
- Capture when you can: when a monster limps and the skull icon shows, a trap plus two Tranq Bombs ends the hunt faster and often pays extra rewards — unless the quest says slay only.
- Play co-op with a plan: use SOS flares freely, spread roles (one stuns, one cuts tails, one supports), and remember hunts scale with players.

5. Your First-Hunt Checklist
- ✅ Test weapons in training; commit to one main plus one backup
- ✅ Eat a meal and restock potions, Farcaster, and traps
- ✅ Attack one body part until a wound glows, then Focus Strike it
- ✅ Sharpen and heal on your Seikret, not in front of the monster
- ✅ Check weaknesses in the field guide; use environmental traps
- ✅ Capture limping monsters unless the quest requires a slay
