Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Guide: 9 Tips to Win Races
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is won in the corners — one long drift can charge a purple boost that slingshots you past the pack. This guide makes winning friendly: starts, coins, items, and shortcuts.
1. Nail the Start, Then Feed on Coins
Two habits decide the first lap. Get them right and you race from the front, where the clean lines and best items live.
- Rocket Start: hold accelerate just as the countdown's “2” begins to fade. Too early and you burn out and stall; timed right, you launch ahead of the pack.
- Grab coins early: every coin raises your top speed slightly, up to 10 coins. Sweep a coin line on lap 1 even if it is a touch wider — the speed pays you back all race.
- Protect your coins: getting hit drops coins and slows you. After any hit, re-collect before you chase shortcuts.
- Use your slipstream: follow a racer ahead closely for a few seconds to earn a small draft boost, then slingshot past on a straight.
New to the kart-racing feel? The positioning habits in our Rocket League guide carry over surprisingly well.
2. Drifting Is Everything: Charge the Purple Boost
Hold the drift button through a turn and steer into it. Your sparks change color as the boost charges — release on straights for the biggest payoff.
| Sparks | Boost | When to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | Mini-Turbo | Short, tight corners — release early rather than hitting a wall |
| Orange | Super Mini-Turbo | Medium bends — the reliable workhorse boost |
| Purple | Ultra Mini-Turbo | Long sweepers in Deluxe — hold the drift, wiggle to extend the turn, huge payoff |
Start drifts early, aim for the inside of the turn, and counter-steer gently to keep the angle. On 200cc, tap the brake while still drifting to stay on the road — speed you cannot control is just a wall waiting to happen.
3. Play Items Smart: Defend First, Attack Second
Beginners fire every item the second they get it. Winners hold the right item for the right moment.
- Hold defense behind you: trail a Banana or shell behind your kart in first place — it blocks incoming Red Shells, your most common threat.
- Save Mushrooms for shortcuts: a Mushroom through an off-road patch, grass, or a cut corner is worth more than a small boost on a straight.
- Stars and Bullets are catch-up tools: use a Star through traffic and off-road cuts; save a Bullet Bill for a straight where it can pass the most racers.
- Watch the rear view: a quick glance back before a turn tells you whether to defend, drop a Banana on the racing line, or let a faster racer pass and draft them.

4. Know the Track: Anti-Gravity, Gliders, and Shortcuts
Deluxe adds tricks that reward track knowledge. Learn one new shortcut per cup and your times drop fast.
- Spin Boost in anti-gravity: in blue anti-gravity sections, bumping another racer or a glowing bumper gives both of you a small speed boost — trade bumps when it is safe.
- Trick off every ramp: flick to trick as you leave jumps and ramps for a small landing boost, and steer your glider to land on lower, faster lines.
- Learn the famous cuts: many tracks hide Mushroom shortcuts across grass, dirt, or gaps. Practice them in Time Trials first so race day is muscle memory.
- Turn on help if you need it: Smart Steering and Auto Accelerate are great learning aids for new players — just know Smart Steering blocks some off-road shortcuts, so switch it off once you are chasing cuts.

5. Your First-Cup Checklist
- ✅ Time the Rocket Start on the fading “2” — no burnouts
- ✅ Collect up to 10 coins on lap 1 and re-collect after hits
- ✅ Drift every real turn; chase purple sparks on long bends
- ✅ Hold a Banana or shell behind you when leading
- ✅ Save Mushrooms for off-road shortcuts, not straights
- ✅ Trick off ramps, Spin Boost in anti-gravity, practice one cut per cup
Which track's shortcut took you the longest to finally land in a real race?
