Animal Crossing: New Horizons Guide: 9 Island Tips

Stranded on a deserted island with a tent and a loan? This Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide turns day-one chaos into a calm plan — Nook Miles, turnips and fossils included.

1. Start Right: Island, Tent and Your First Loan

Tip 1: Choose your island layout slowly. River mouths and the dock cannot move later, so pick a layout you like looking at. Your island name cannot be changed either — take the extra minute.

Tip 2: Place your tent where you actually want to live. Resident Services, the plaza and your neighbours matter more on day 30 than on day one, so leave space around the plaza.

Your first loan is 5,000 Nook Miles, not Bells. Clear the easy Nook Miles+ tasks — catch fish and bugs, talk to neighbours, plant flowers — and the tent becomes a house fast. If you love that slow, satisfying first-year loop, our Stardew Valley beginner guide has the same cosy rhythm.

2. Tools and Resources: What to Gather First

Start with flimsy tools, upgrade to stone, then to standard tools. The Vaulting Pole and Ladder unlock through the early story and open up your rivers and cliffs — push the main tasks until you have both.

Resource Where From Save It For
Iron Nuggets Hitting rocks with a shovel or axe Save 30 for the Nook's Cranny build — do not sell them early
Wood, Softwood, Hardwood Chopping trees with an axe DIY recipes, bridges and furniture
Stone and Clay Hitting rocks Crafting, fences and island decor
Tree Branches Shaking trees Flimsy tools and campfire basics

Tip 3: Do not eat fruit before hitting rocks unless you mean to break one. One rock each day is the money rock, and digging two holes behind you stops recoil so you can land all eight hits.

3. Your Daily Loop: Bells, Fossils and the Money Tree

Tip 4: Run a simple daily loop. Dig up the four buried fossils and have Blathers assess them, shake every non-fruit tree (stand ready with a net — wasps are real), hit every rock, and check the beach for shells and a message bottle DIY.

Tip 5: Find the glowing spot, dig up the 1,000 Bells, then bury 10,000 Bells back in the glowing hole. A few days later it grows into a money tree worth three times that amount — the safest early investment on the island.

Tip 6: Donate the first of every fish, bug and fossil to the museum, then sell the duplicates. That one-donate-first rule builds the museum while your pockets fill — a habit that also pays off in our Minecraft beginner guide, where saving the first rare find matters.

4. Turnips and the Stalk Market: Risky, Fun, Optional

Tip 7: Meet Daisy Mae on Sunday morning before noon to buy turnips. Prices change twice a day at Nook's Cranny from Monday to Saturday, so check in the morning and again in the afternoon.

  • Buy small the first week — learn your island's price pattern before you spend big.
  • Sell before the following Sunday, or your turnips spoil and are worth almost nothing.
  • Any price above what you paid is a win. Waiting for a perfect spike is how beginners lose Bells.

Turnips are a side game, never rent money. Fund your house loans with fish, bugs, fossils and hot items of the day first. For another world where patience beats panic, see our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom guide.

5. Grow the Island: Shops, Villagers and 3 Stars

Tip 8: Build in story order — museum tent to building, Nook's Cranny, the first bridge, then plots for new neighbours. Each step unlocks the next, so follow Tom Nook's "What should I do?" prompt whenever you feel stuck.

Tip 9: Aim for a 3-star island rating to unlock the Island Designer terraforming app after the K.K. Slider concert. Plant flowers and trees, place furniture and fences outdoors, keep weeds and dropped items tidy, and ask Isabelle for her exact rating feedback — she tells you what is missing.

Once terraforming opens, reshape slowly: one river bend or cliff path at a time. That build-as-you-go mindset is the same one we teach in our Palworld beginner guide for bases that actually work.

Your First-Week Island Checklist

  • Pick your layout and island name carefully — neither can be changed.
  • Pay the 5,000 Nook Miles loan with easy Nook Miles+ tasks.
  • Save 30 Iron Nuggets for Nook's Cranny; land eight hits on every rock.
  • Daily: fossils, trees, rocks, beach — donate first, sell duplicates.
  • Bury 10,000 Bells in the glowing spot; try a small turnip buy on Sunday.
  • Follow Tom Nook to 3 stars and unlock Island Designer terraforming.

What did you name your island — and did your first turnip week make you rich or teach you a lesson?
