How2 Mac: Free Your Storage in 10 Minutes
A Mac with a nearly full drive does not just complain — it slows, stalls updates, and forgets how to breathe. Ten honest minutes will find the hogs and free real space safely.
Start With the Map, Not the Trash
Open System Settings, then General, then Storage. Wait for the colored bar to finish thinking. This map separates documents, apps, system data, photos, and mail so you delete with evidence instead of vibes.
Sort each category by size. The biggest surprises are usually old iPhone backups, forgotten video projects, and apps you opened once in 2022.
The Safe Big Wins, in Order
- Old device backups: in Finder device view, remove backups for phones you no longer own.
- Downloads folder: installers (.dmg and .pkg files) are dead weight after setup.
- Large videos: move finished projects to an external drive, keep the library lean.
- Unused apps: uninstall from the Storage view so leftovers go too.
Back up before any big clear-out — the same discipline as any good fix, and the reason AirDrop fixes and transfers go smoother on a machine with room to work.
System Data: Big, Vague, Mostly Tameable
| Culprit | Safe move |
|---|---|
| Time Machine snapshots | Connect your backup drive and let them clear |
| App caches | Restart, then let apps rebuild only what they need |
| Mail attachments | Remove local copies; they stay on the server |
Never delete random folders inside the Library by hand. If System Data stays huge after a restart and a backup, that is a job for help, not guesswork.
Keep It Free Without Thinking About It
Turn on the built-in recommendations: store older files in iCloud if you use it, optimize streaming downloads, and empty the Trash automatically after 30 days. Keep at least ten percent of your drive free as working room for updates and swap space.
A monthly two-minute glance at the Storage map beats a yearly panic clean — and pairs well with tidier files, as in our macOS Finder tips.
Summary: Map, Clear, Keep Room
Read the Storage map, take the safe big wins, tame System Data with a restart and a backup, and keep a tenth of your drive free. Your Mac will feel lighter today.
How much space did you find hiding in old backups and downloads?
