How2 Mac: AirDrop Fixes in 5 Minutes

AirDrop is magic when it works and a mystery when it does not — the other device simply vanishes. Five minutes of ordered checks fixes nearly every disappearance.

Check the Two Radios First

AirDrop needs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both on, on both devices — even though the transfer itself rides a direct Wi-Fi link the two devices create between themselves.

Toggle both off and back on in Control Center. It feels too simple to matter, and it resolves a surprising share of invisible-device cases on the spot.

Fix Visibility and the Usual Blockers

Open Finder, choose AirDrop, and confirm 'Allow me to be discovered by' is not set to No One while you are testing:

  • Contacts Only works only when both devices are signed into iCloud and each has the other's contact card.
  • Personal Hotspot on either device can block AirDrop — turn it off to test.
  • Firewall: in System Settings, Network, Firewall, make sure 'Block all incoming connections' is off.
  • VPNs can hide devices too — disconnect briefly to test.

The Five-Minute Order

Run the checks in this order and stop the moment it works:

Minute Check
1 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth toggled on both devices
2 Discovery set to Everyone for 10 Minutes
3 Hotspot and VPN off
4 Both devices awake, unlocked, and nearby
5 Restart the stubborn device

When It Still Refuses

If a very old Mac is involved, look for 'Don't see who you're looking for?' in the AirDrop window and use the older-device search — legacy hardware speaks a slightly older dialect.

Still stuck after the list? The fault is usually account or network settings, and that is a fix a remote session handles quickly and safely.

The Bottom Line

What do you AirDrop most — photos, documents, or links you meant to read later?
