How2 Mac: Use Focus Filters in Minutes

Your Mac’s Focus modes can do far more than silence banners. Focus Filters quietly swap your inboxes, accounts, and tabs to match the mode you are in.

Find Focus Filters

  • Open System Settings → Focus
  • Pick a Focus, for example Work or Personal
  • Scroll to Focus Filters and click Add Filter

Filters are per-app rules that activate automatically whenever that Focus turns on.

Three Filters Worth Setting

App Filter Idea
Mail Work Focus shows only your work account
Messages Personal Focus shows only your personal conversations
Safari Each Focus opens its own Tab Group

Pair them with a tidy desktop and your Mac starts feeling like two calm machines instead of one noisy one.

Automate the Switch

Add a schedule or automation to each Focus — time of day, location, or opening an app — and the filters follow with zero taps. Give it one full day before judging; the quiet sneaks up on you.

Summary

“Which app distracts you most when the wrong Focus is on?”
  • Filters live inside each Focus
  • Mail, Messages, Safari first
  • Automate by time or place
