Persona 5 Royal Guide: 9 Tips to Max Your Year
Persona 5 Royal gives you one school year, a calendar that never stops, and more to do than days to do it in. These 9 tips help you clear every Palace on time, max the Confidants that matter, and still ace your exams.
1. The Calendar Is the Real Boss
Every Palace has a hard deadline. Miss it and it is game over, so treat the deadline — not the boss — as your first enemy. Infiltrate early, push to the Treasure route in as few visits as you can, then send the Calling Card.
Finishing a Palace fast is not rushing. Every day you save becomes a free day for Confidants, social stats, and Mementos requests. Steal the Treasure first, then enjoy Tokyo.
- Scout the Palace as soon as it opens — do not wait for the story to nudge you.
- Grab all three Will Seeds in each Palace for a powerful accessory and bonus SP.
- Use Safe Rooms to save, warp, and regroup instead of burning healing items.
2. Confidants: Spend Time Where It Pays
Confidants are not just story scenes — each rank unlocks real gameplay power, from Baton Pass to free evenings. Always carry a Persona matching the Confidant's Arcana to earn bonus points toward the next rank.
| Confidant | Arcana | Why Prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Sadayo Kawakami | Temperance | Rank 10 frees your evenings after Palace and Mementos trips |
| Toranosuke Yoshida | Sun | Better Shadow negotiation — money, items, and easier recruits |
| Chihaya Mifune | Fortune | Affinity readings that boost Confidants without spending a day |
| Takuto Maruki | Councillor | Reach Rank 9 by November 17 to unlock Royal's third semester |
| Kasumi Yoshizawa | Faith | Reach Rank 5 before the second semester ends for her full story |
| Goro Akechi | Justice | Reach Rank 8 by late November for extra third-semester scenes |
Party members matter too: maxing a teammate unlocks their evolved Persona and stronger Baton Pass bonuses. If you enjoyed the party planning in our Final Fantasy VII Rebirth guide, this is the same lesson — relationships are a combat system.
3. Social Stats: Small Habits, Big Unlocks
Your five social stats — Knowledge, Guts, Proficiency, Kindness, and Charm — gate Confidants, part-time jobs, and dialogue choices. They only grow, so steady daily habits beat last-minute cramming.
- Knowledge: study at the diner on rainy days for bonus points, and answer class questions correctly.
- Guts: take the Big Bang Burger challenge and visit the clinic's trial medicines.
- Proficiency: craft infiltration tools at your desk — lockpicks are always worth it.
- Kindness: tend the plant in your room (free, no time passes) and work at the flower shop.
- Charm: visit the bathhouse, especially on rainy evenings, and read or watch DVDs that raise it.
Books, DVDs, and video games from the rental shop are efficient because one activity can finish a stat book while a Confidant is unavailable. Think of it like the skill planning in our Skyrim beginner guide — a little every day compounds.
4. Palace Combat: Weaknesses, Baton Pass, Technicals
Fights are puzzles. Hit a Shadow's weakness (or land a critical) to knock it down, then Baton Pass to a teammate for a damage boost — chain passes across the party and the final attacker hits hardest. Knock down every enemy and you earn an All-Out Attack or a negotiation.
Layer in Technical hits: strike a burned enemy with wind, a frozen enemy with a physical attack, or a sleeping enemy with almost anything for bonus damage and a knockdown — even when you do not know the weakness.
- SP is your real health bar. Buy SP-restoring accessories from Takemi's clinic as they unlock, and cook or buy coffee and curry ingredients to recover between trips.
- Ambush from cover whenever possible — a free first turn wins fights before they start.
- Negotiate instead of finishing weakened Shadows: money, items, or a new Persona for the Velvet Room.
5. The Velvet Room: Fuse Forward, Never Hoard
Your starter Personas fall behind fast. Fuse them upward constantly — a fused Persona inherits chosen skills, so pass down coverage your party lacks: elements, healing, and buffs like Tarukaja and debuffs like Tarunda, which quietly win boss fights.
Register strong results in the Compendium before fusing them away, use the Gallows to strengthen a favorite, and check fusion alarms for boosted outcomes. New players who love deep party building should also see our Baldur's Gate 3 beginner guide and Hogwarts Legacy beginner guide.
- Keep one Persona with healing and one with buffs/debuffs in your stock at all times.
- Fuse during alarms when you can — itemized and strengthened results are a real power spike.
- Complete Mementos requests between Palaces for money, XP, and Confidant progress.
6. Your First-Month Checklist
- Clear the first Palace with days to spare, then bank the free time.
- Start Kawakami, Yoshida, and your party Confidants early; carry matching Arcana Personas.
- Raise Maruki steadily — Rank 9 by November 17 is the key to the third semester.
- Collect all three Will Seeds in every Palace and save SP items for boss days.
- Craft lockpicks on free evenings, tend your plant, and study on rainy days.
- Visit Mementos in batches — clear several requests in one trip.
