Hogwarts Legacy Beginner Guide: 9 Tips to Master Magic
New to Hogwarts Legacy? Your first spells feel weak for one reason — this walkthrough fixes your Talent points, spell sets and gear so magic clicks fast.
1. Start Calm: House, Difficulty and the Main Path
Tip 1: Pick the house you love. Your house changes your common room and a little dialogue, but it does not lock you out of spells, quests or gear — so you cannot choose wrong.
Tip 2: Do professor assignments right away. Many of your best spells in this Hogwarts Legacy guide come from those short homework quests, not just the main story, and they pay off for the whole game.
If you enjoy settling into a huge world at your own pace, our Skyrim beginner guide takes the same explore-first approach.
2. Build Spell Sets You Can Actually Use
You unlock extra spell sets as you progress, so stop trying to fit everything on one wheel. Keep one combat set ready at all times and one exploration set for puzzles.
| Spell Role | Early Examples | Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Levioso, Arresto Momentum, Glacius | Lift, slow or freeze enemies to buy time |
| Force | Accio, Depulso, Descendo, Flipendo | Pull enemies in, push them back, slam them down |
| Damage | Incendio, Confringo, Diffindo | Your main damage — Incendio is close range, Confringo is long range |
| Utility | Revelio, Lumos, Alohomora, Disillusionment | Find loot, light dark areas, open locks, sneak |
Tip 3: A simple combo works on almost everything early — Accio to pull an enemy close, then Incendio at point-blank range. Learn that rhythm before you chase fancy chains.
3. Combat Basics: Dodge, Protego and Ancient Magic
Tip 4: Dodge the red attacks, block the yellow ones. A gold circle means cast Protego in time for a free Stupefy counter; a red circle cannot be blocked, so roll clear instead.
Tip 5: Build your combo meter with basic casts, then spend it. Throw objects with Ancient Magic Throw when the prompt appears, and save your Ancient Magic finisher for trolls, officers and other big threats.
That one-strong-plan thinking is also the heart of our Diablo IV beginner guide, where a focused build carries the early game.
4. Talent Points: Spend Them Like They Matter — They Do
Talent Points start at level 5 and there are not enough to buy everything, so spend with a plan. The Core tree helps every playstyle, so start there.
- Tip 6: Early Core wins — extra spell-set slots, a stronger Protego, and Ancient Magic meter help make every fight easier.
- Spells tree: upgrade the spells you actually cast, like a wider Incendio or a stronger Accio pull.
- Room of Requirement tree: worth it once you brew potions and grow plants often — skip it until that room is part of your routine.
- Stealth and Dark Arts are taste picks. Take them if that is how you want to play, not because a list told you to.
For another game where early choices shape the whole run, see our Elden Ring starter guide.
5. Gear, Gold and Getting Around Faster
Tip 7: Gear stats beat gear looks. Equip the higher offence and defence numbers, sell the rest in Hogsmeade, and open the eye chests around the castle — they are a steady source of gold early on.
Tip 8: Upgrade gear you plan to keep at the Enchanted Loom in the Room of Requirement, and add a trait when a piece will stay with you for a while.
Tip 9: Unlock Floo Flames everywhere and finish Flying class to get your broom — the Highlands open up once you can fly. On the ground, cast Revelio often: Field Guide pages, chests and Merlin Trials are easy to walk right past. That curiosity habit pays off in our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom guide too.
Your First-Week Hogwarts Checklist
- Pick your favourite house and finish professor assignments for new spells.
- Set one combat spell set and one exploration spell set.
- Practice: dodge red, Protego on gold, Accio into Incendio.
- Spend Talent Points in Core first, then your favourite spells.
- Sell spare gear, open eye chests, unlock Floo Flames, and get your broom.
Which spell combo clicked for you first — and which enemy gave you the most trouble in the Highlands?
