Well, Gary Just Ate the Barista

Interactive Documentation v1.0
(And No, We Don’t Know Why)

01. The Rebrand

LOG INITIALIZED

  • > Date: Tuesday, The End of the World-ish
  • > Mood: Caffeinated and terrified
  • > Status: Hiding in a cleaning supply closet

Usually, I write about artisanal cheeses. Today, I’m pivoting. The niche is now: Not Dying.

In the movies, there’s always a prologue. A scientist drops a beaker of green goo. A monkey bites a patient zero. We didn’t get a Reason. We didn’t even get a press release.

Critical Assessment

CRITICAL: We are operating without a standard apocalypse protocol.

02. The Incident

Event Log Entry

It wasn't majestic. Gary didn't groan, "Braaaaaains." He just made this wet, rhythmic chewing noise. Like someone trying to eat peanut butter without opening their mouth.

The barista dropped the milk pitcher. Steam hissed. Gary kept chewing on the guy's shoulder like it was tough jerky. I thought, “Wow, that is an incredibly aggressive HR violation.” Then Gary looked up.

03. Why? Who Cares!

While people were debating the socio-economic implications of the rage virus, Gary lunged at Mrs. Higgins. Within twelve seconds, she was making the sound: Zom. Zom. Zom.

PRO-TIP:

Don't wait for a diagnosis to start running.

It’s catchy, in the worst possible way. Hence the name: Zom Zoms. It sounds cute. It helps with the panic attacks.

04. The Escape

I wish I could tell you I went full hero mode. I did not. I grabbed my laptop and I ran past the muffins, past the screaming customers, and past a guy trying to fight with a wet floor sign.

[Image Placeholder: Building evacuation floor plan structural diagnostic]

Hard Deadline

Find a secure location before sundown.

Currently in a janitorial closet. Status: 14% battery, half-eaten scone, and industrial bleach.

05. Threat Intel

Known Data Points:

  • Fast (Aggressive power-walkers)
  • The "Zom Zom" noise is a clear proximity indicator.
  • High appetite, low discernment.

Severe Warning

Transmission occurs within 12 seconds of contact.

06. Comms Array

If you are reading this, stay inside. Lock your doors. And if you hear a wet chewing sound, for the love of god, don’t turn around to see if it’s just someone eating a peach.

It’s not a peach. It’s never a peach.

User Feed / Back-Channel Intercepts:

SoccerMom44: Is this a flash mob? My neighbor is eating my rhododendrons!

SurvivalSteve: NOBODY LISTENED TO STEVE!

I Am MacGyver

Chapter 2: The Inventory
(If MacGyver Cried a Lot and Used Scotch Tape)

01. The Situation

📊 TELEMETRY DATA:
Tuesday, Late Afternoon | Mood: Delusional | Status: Armed

The screaming outside has stopped, which is somehow worse than the screaming. Now, it’s just the ambient noise of the apocalypse: distant car alarms and the occasional Zom. Zom. Zom. from the hallway.

02. Resource Scan

I realized a bottle of bleach is a terrible weapon. I need a zombie-slaying instrument of destruction. I dumped my backpack and scanned the janitorial shelves:

  • A wooden mop handle base
  • Heavy-duty desktop stapler
  • Duct tape (The absolute Holy Grail)
  • Pair of rusty scissors
  • Tangled laptop charger cord

03. Crafting Log: The Ex-Calibur

I decided to go for maximum reach. You don’t want a Zom Zom close enough to breathe on you. Their breath smells like raw meat and expired dairy products.

BUILD SCHEMATIC SPECIFICATIONS:
1. Structural Base: Mop handle core shaft.
2. Cutting Edges: Scissor blades unfurled and affixed to the tip via industrial layer wrap of Duct Tape.
3. Counter-Weight Balanced: Office stapler tied securely at the base grip.

It looked completely pathetic. Like a dynamic fantasy spear designed by a hyperactive toddler. But it is mine.

04. Combat Drill: Practice Swings

I performed three critical spatial calibration maneuvers in the narrow confines of the closet:

⚠️ DIAGNOSTIC HARDWARE WARNING: Calibration Failed.
- Swing 1: Over-extended line, cleanly knocked over yellow bucket of floor wax.
- Swing 2: Lateral cross-swing, scissor blades wiggled layout-ominously.
- Swing 3: Rapid upward thrust, dislocated left shoulder joint (almost).

It's perfect. Now to open the door.

05. Rules for Survival

Based entirely on my visual observations of Gary and poor Mrs. Higgins out through the glass panels, here is the official working manifest:

1. Cardio is King: Don't try to vault heavy courtyard fences unless you can land cleanly. A twisted ankle is a formal dinner bell invitation.

2. Deconstruct the Rhythm: (Chew, chew, chew). You have roughly 4 seconds of auditory cueing before high-threat visual contact occurs.

3. Absolute Silence on Comms: No individual should die because they forgot to mute a spam call regarding expiring car warranties.

4. Avoid High-Density Congestion Zones: Steer clear of artisanal coffee bars, boutique fitness gyms, and the local DMV registry windows.

06. Threat Entity: Mister Whiskers

Breed: 50% Ragdoll premium mix, 50% Abyssal Demon.
Age: Timeless / Unknown.

PROXIMATE BIOLOGICAL THEORY: Mister Whiskers is Patient Zero. Three days ago, he stared blankly at a blank living room wall for four continuous hours. He wasn't sleeping. He was waiting.

If I somehow survive this trek back to my apartment building and find him leading a massive Zom Zom tactical regiment from atop the refrigerator, I won't even be marginally surprised.

07. Final Contact (Breach Detected)

🚨 CRITICAL SYSTEM ALERT: PHYSICAL BREACH EN ROUTE

The spilled floor wax is slowly seeping back under the door frame gap. It smells like synthetic lemons mixed with chemical skin burns. Someone is clearly walking down the main hall.

They aren't doing the standard scraping, dragging Zom rhythm. They are... whistling?

I'm firmly grabbing the grip of the Ex-Calibur. Wish me luck.

COMMENTS DECK OVERCEPT:
GarysWife: That whistling pattern sounds exactly like Gary! Please tell him to come home right away!
BladeMaster99: Total amateur setup move. Ditch the broom stick and go find an active gas-powered nail gun.

The Most Terrifying Sound on Earth

SYS_LOG: 001 // FILE: CHRONICLES // V 3.0
(It’s Not What You Think)

01. The Knock

⚠️ USER METRICS

  • Date: Tuesday, Twilight? Is it Tuesday still?
  • Mood: Confused and strangely intimidated.
  • Current Status: No longer alone. Unfortunately.

They say in space, no one can hear you scream. In an office building during the apocalypse, everyone can hear you whistling the "Kars4Kids" jingle.

That’s what it was. 1-877-Kars4Kids...

I gripped The Ex-Calibur. My knuckles were white. The whistling stopped right outside the closet door. I held my breath, smelling bleach and lemon floor wax. A shadow fell across the crack under the door.

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

It wasn't the frantic pounding of a survivor. It wasn't the wet slapping sound of Gary trying to open a door with his face. It was a polite, assertive, "I need to speak to the manager" knock.

02. Enter Brenda

I don't know why I opened it. Maybe I thought a Zom Zom wouldn't knock. Maybe I just wanted it to be over. I unlocked the door, threw it open, and thrust my scissors-mop-stapler spear forward with a battle cry that sounded more like a strangled squeak.

The point of the scissors stopped exactly one inch from the nose of Brenda from Human Resources.

Brenda was wearing a sensible beige pantsuit. Her hair was in an immobile bun. She was holding a clipboard. She looked at the rusty scissors hovering in front of her face, then down at the stapler taped to the other end, and finally, up at me. She didn't blink.

"That is not regulation equipment," Brenda said.

Her voice was flat. It was the voice she used when denying vacation requests.

"Brenda?" I lowered the spear. "Are you... okay? Did you see Gary?"

"Gary is currently violating several conduct codes in the lobby," she replied, making a note on her clipboard. "We are dealing with a severe productivity bottleneck. Also, you’ve spilled wax everywhere. That’s a slip-and-fall hazard. I’m documenting this."

03. Corporate Cognitive Dissonance

I stared at her. The world had ended. People were eating people. And Brenda was documenting slip hazards.

"Brenda, they are zombies! Zom Zoms! They're eating faces!"

Management Directive

She sighed, the sound of a dying air conditioner.

"The company prefers the term 'Aggressive Personnel Non-Compliance.' Look, I don’t have time for your hysterics. The network is down. I need to get to the server room on the 4th floor to secure the Q3 projections before the backup battery fails."

She stepped over the wax puddle, completely unfazed.

"Are you coming? You seem to have... initiative." She eyed The Ex-Calibur with disdain. "We can use the stairs by the east wing. The lobby is currently unacceptable."

I have a choice. Stay in the closet and wait for Gary to figure out doorknobs, or follow Brenda, a woman so deeply embedded in corporate culture that she doesn't realize the civilization that created it has collapsed.

I grabbed my backpack. I’m following Brenda. Honestly? I think the Zom Zoms might be scared of her.

04. The Escape Plan (Brenda's Death March)

Brenda made me draw this on the back of an overdue invoice while she lectured me about proper footwear for emergencies.

🎯 THE GOAL

Get from Ground Zero (Closet) to the 4th Floor Server Room without becoming an appetizer.

Route Matrix

  • You Are Here (The Closet): Smells like bleach and fear.
  • Lobby (Red Zone - Do Not Enter): Contains Gary, The Daily Grind kiosk (RIP Barista), and approx 15 "Aggressive Personnel."
  • East Stairwell (Our Route): Brenda says it should be clear because "Sales never uses the stairs." Hope she's right.
  • Elevators (Death Traps): If the power dies, you're canned food.
  • 2nd & 3rd Floors: Unknown territory. Probably full of Marketing zombies. (How will we tell the difference? Zing.)
  • 4th Floor (Server Room): The Holy Land. Has heavy, locking doors and climate control. Brenda thinks we'll be safe there. I think we'll just starve to death comfortably chilled.

05. Last Will and Testament

Document Entry: Secure Record

In the likely event that The Ex-Calibur snaps in half or Brenda sacrifices me to a horde of undead accountants to save the Q3 projections, I, being of unsound mind and terrified body, hereby declare this my last will.

Article I: The Cat

To my neighbor, Mrs. Higgins (if she isn't already a Zom Zom): I leave my cat, Mister Whiskers.

WARNING: He requires premium salmon pate at 5:00 PM sharp. If you are late, he will stare at you until you question your own existence. Also, I’m 80% sure he caused the apocalypse. Good luck.

Article II: Finances

To Sallie Mae and the Department of Education: You can have my $45,000 in student loan debt. You’ll have to collect it from my reanimated corpse. Come and get it.

06. Digital Legacy & Status Update

Article III: Digital Legacy

To whoever finds my phone:

  • Please clear my browser history. Don't look at it. Just wipe it. It’s not weird, it’s just... embarrassing research for novels I never wrote.
  • Post one final tweet from my account that just says: "Told you so." (It doesn't matter that I never actually predicted zombies; it will make me look smart post-mortem).

Article IV: Belongings

My artisanal cheese board goes to Gary. I hope he chokes on it.

Status Update

Brenda is tapping her foot. She says we are "burning daylight." We are opening the door to the stairwell in 3... 2... 1...

The Stairwell of Networking Doom

CHRONICLES // V 4.0
(And Kevin from Marketing)

01. Current Status

⚠️ CRITICAL UPDATE

  • Date: Tuesday, The Longest Day Ever
  • Mood: Sweaty and deeply appreciative of cardio.
  • Current Status: Catching my breath on the 3rd-floor landing.

I hate stairs.

Even before the world ended, I hated stairs. Now, imagine climbing them in the dark, clutching a mop-stapler-spear, while a woman in a pantsuit critiques your breathing technique.

02. Ascension Protocol

"In through the nose, out through the mouth," Brenda whispered harshly. "You are hyperventilating. It’s unprofessional."

We entered the East Stairwell. It was dim, lit only by those eerie red emergency exit signs that make everyone look like they’re in a submarine movie. The acoustics were terrible. Every scuff of my sneaker sounded like a gunshot.

We made it past the second floor without incident. I was starting to feel confident. I gripped the Ex-Calibur. I felt like a warrior. I felt like a survivor.

Then we hit the third-floor landing.

03. The Meeting That Should Have Been An Email

The door to the 3rd floor (Marketing & Brand Synergy) was propped open with a recycling bin. And standing there, blocking our path up to the 4th floor, was a small cluster of Zom Zoms.

But not just any Zom Zoms. These were the cool kids.

I recognized Kevin. Kevin was the Head of Digital Outreach. He was wearing skinny jeans, a vintage band t-shirt, and a blazer. He looked trendy, except for the fact that he was currently gnawing on the railing.

He stopped chewing. He turned. He saw us.

Zom. Zom. Zom.

"Oh god," I whispered. "It’s the Influencers."

Three of them turned toward us. Kevin, a girl named Ashleigh (with two 'e's), and an intern whose name I never learned but who always stole my almond milk.

They didn't run. They didn't shamble. They brunch-walked. It was this fast, eager stride, like they just spotted an open table on a patio.

04. Combat: Round One

"Kevin," Brenda barked. "This is a restricted area. Return to your desk."

Kevin did not return to his desk. Kevin lunged.

I panicked. I admit it. I thrust Ex-Calibur forward. The good news: The scissors worked. I jabbed Kevin right in the blazer pocket. The bad news: The duct tape held, but the mop handle was old.

CRACK.

The handle snapped. I was left holding a splintered stick, while Kevin—now wearing my scissors like a brooch—stumbled back but kept coming. He reached for me. His hands were clammy. His mouth opened wide. I could smell the espresso and rot.

WHAM.

A heavy, metallic CLUNK echoed through the stairwell. I opened my eyes. Kevin was on the floor. Brenda stood over him, holding her heavy-duty, metal-bound clipboard like a tennis racket. She had backhanded him with the force of a thousand rejected expense reports.

Ashleigh (with two 'e's) hissed and swiped at Brenda. Brenda didn't flinch. She pulled a can of compressed air (keyboard cleaner) from her pocket and sprayed it directly into Ashleigh’s face.

PSSSSHHHHHHHT!

Ashleigh recoiled, confused by the freezing blast of air.

"Go!" Brenda yelled, shoving me toward the next flight of stairs. "Move! I will not have my Q3 projections derailed by entry-level staff!"

05. Safe?

We scrambled up the last flight of stairs. I could hear the Zom Zom chewing noise getting louder behind us. The intern was gaining on me. I threw my heavy-duty stapler (which had fallen off my stick) at him. It hit him in the shin. He didn't care.

We hit the 4th-floor door. It was locked.

"Keycard!" I screamed. "Brenda, the keycard!"

Brenda fumbled with her lanyard. Her hands were finally shaking. Just a little. The intern was five steps away. Four steps. Three.

BEEP.

The light turned green. We fell through the door and slammed it shut just as a fist pounded against the other side.

We are in the hallway outside the Server Room. It’s quiet here. The air conditioning is humming. I looked at Brenda. Her bun is slightly askew. Just one strand of hair is out of place. It is the most terrifying thing I have ever seen.

"You saved me," I panted. "You clipboarded him."

Brenda straightened her jacket. "Kevin has always been a disruption. Now, let’s get the data. Then we can discuss your broken mop. That was company property."

We are safe for now. But the Server Room door is ajar. And I hear a low hum coming from inside. Not a computer hum. A purring hum.

06. Data File: Enemy Profile

CLASSIFIED // THE MARKETING ZOM ZOM
Scientific Name Homo Brand-Awareness
Danger Level HIGH (They travel in packs)
Weaknesses Compressed air, heavy clipboards, possibly bad WiFi.

Distinguishing Features:

  • Better dressed than you.
  • Still wearing Bluetooth earbuds.
  • Will eat your brain while thinking about how to tweet about it.

The King in the North

SYS_LOG // FILE: SYS_LOG_v5
"The IT Department's Fortress of Solitude."

01. IT Fortress

  • > MOOD: COLD. CONFUSED. RELIEVED?
  • > TEMP: 60 DEGREES

While the rest of the world is burning, the server room is crisp and air-conditioned. Deafening hum of cooling fans. Blue and green LED city skyline.

And then there was that sound. Purrrrrr. Purrrrrr. Vibrating through the floorboards.

02. The New Sysadmin

> "DON'T TOUCH HIM! HE IS DOWNLOADING THE INTERNET!"

Past Rack A, past Rack B... atop the Master Control Unit, bathed in blue light. Mister Whiskers wasn't just sitting. He was throning.

Tactical Assessment:

He didn't cause the apocalypse. He just found the warmest spot in the building to watch it happen. I respect that.

03. Enter IT Dave

A section of floor tiles popped up. Dave from IT appeared, wearing a hoodie that said "I Paused My Game to Be Here". He looked like he hadn’t slept in 2014.

Network Status: "The internet is just memes and panic right now. Twitter is gone. It's just a scrolling feed of the crying cat emoji."

BRENDA OVERRIDE:

"I don't care about Twitter. I need the spreadsheets. Dave, guard the door. You, find something useful."

04. Performance Review: Q4

FROM: Brenda (HR / Survival Lead)
TO: Kevin (Marketing / Zombie)
SUBJECT: The End Times

Performance Summary:

Kevin’s transition from "Social Media Guru" to "Undead Antagonist" has been seamless, though largely counter-productive to company goals.

Strengths:

  • Persistence: Displayed remarkable tenacity in the stairwell. Does not take "no" (or "door") for an answer.
  • Hunger for Growth: Eager to consume new material (my arm).
  • Team Building: Successfully onboarded Ashleigh and the Intern into the zombie lifestyle in record time.

05. Areas for Improvement

  • Personal Space: Consistently violates the 6-foot social distancing rule. Attempting to bite a supervisor is a grim breach of etiquette.
  • Dress Code: Visible open wounds and lack of socks are not "Business Casual."
  • Communication: Vocabulary regressed from "Synergy" to guttural groaning. Improved sincerity, lacks clarity.

> Rating: 1/5 Stars (Needs Improvement)

Action Item: If Kevin attempts another face-to-face meeting, I will be forced to use the fire extinguisher.

06. Loot Drop (IT Stash)

Item Qty Utility Notes
Zip Ties (Industrial) 500+ High Good for fixing gear or restraining Dave.
Energy Drinks (Radioactive Green) 2 Cases Med Heart palpitations mimic zombie rage.
Nerf Maverick (Modded) 1 Low Fun to shoot at Brenda when she isn't looking.
Mechanical Keyboard 1 High Heavy base. Solid blunt-force weapon. Clicks satisfyingly.
"Hoodie of Holding" 1 High 6 pockets. Rogue assassin vibes.
Catnip Mouse 1 CRITICAL Keeps Mister Whiskers from murdering us.

07. New Objective

Brenda pulled the flash drive. "I have the data. Now, we need a vehicle. The company leased a Prius for the sales team. It’s in the underground garage."

> THREAT LEVEL ESCALATION:

"The garage? That's below the lobby. That's where the big ones are... The gym rats. Crossfitters. They turned while doing burpees. They are... fast."

01. The Descent

  • Location: The Stairwell
  • Mood: Cardio-induced panic
  • Formation: Tight

March Order:

  1. Brenda (Point / Keyboard Broadsword)
  2. Me (Middle / Holding surprisingly calm cat)
  3. Dave (Rear / Nerf Maverick safety off)

Down we went. 4th floor. 3rd floor. Lobby level. Then... B1.

02. The Concrete Jungle (B1 Level)

"THE PRIUS IS IN SPOT 42B."

The door swung open with a metallic SCREECH. Smelled like gasoline, tire rubber, and... stale whey protein?

Auditory Warning:

Not the wet chew-chew of normal Zom Zoms. Heavy breathing. Grunting. Intense physical exertion.

HRRRGH. PUFF. HRRRGH. PUFF.

03. Enter the Crossfitters

They weren't office-worker shamblers. They wore compression gear. Veins bulging. They didn't walk; they lunged.

Enemy Profile: The Gym Bros

  • Speed: High
  • Strength: High
  • Behavior: Muscle memory and rage. Aggressive walking lunges.

> CAT_MROW DETECTED.

The Lunge-Walker stopped. Eyes bloodshot. Roared like a jaguar dropping a 400lb deadlift on its toe.

04. The Sprint (Evacuation)

"Run!" Brenda commanded. The Crossfit Zombies charged, vaulting over car hoods. Sneakers squeaking terrifyingly fast on concrete.

TARGET: LIME GREEN PRIUS

A Crossfit Zombie slammed into the driver's side window face-first. Nose broke. Didn't flinch. Started punching the window.

> SAFETY PROTOCOL:

"Seatbelts," Brenda snapped. We clipped the punching zombie, leaving a trail of rubber and undead gym enthusiasts behind us.

05. The Dinner Bell Mod (Weaponry)

Foam darts are useless because Zom Zoms don't feel shame. The idea is to shoot something noisy into a corner.

We launched at first light.

The river behind Joe’s scrapyard was covered in a thick, oily fog. It smelled like dead fish and old tires.

"If you fall in, I ain't fishing you out. The catfish in here have teeth now."
— Joe

With a mighty splash, the barge hit the water. It rocked violently side-to-side. We scrambled aboard, tossing Mister Whiskers and Buster onto the minivan seats.

02. The Roar

Joe grabbed the pull cord of the ancient Evinrude outboard. He ripped it hard.

[ RIVER: BLOCKED ] [ SMELL: BURNING HAIR ]

01. The Garbage Patch

  • Date: Thursday Morning
  • Mood: Nauseous.
  • Status: Prying a diaper out of the boat propeller.

You know how people say, "One man's trash is another man's treasure?"

In the apocalypse, one man's trash is a floating island of horror that tries to eat your boat.

We approached The Garbage Patch. It spanned the entire width of the river, a festering mosaic of styrofoam coolers, driftwood, plastic bottles, and unidentifiable sludge.

"Cut the engine!" Joe hissed. "If the intake sucks up a plastic bag, we're dead in the water."

The roaring motor died. The silence that followed was heavy. We drifted toward the blockade, carried by the slow, oily current.

"We need to pole through," Brenda commanded. She grabbed a long piece of scrap pipe. I grabbed my stick. Dave grabbed a broken oar. We pushed against the wall of garbage. It felt squishy.

02. The Squeeze

There was a narrow gap near the eastern bank—a channel about five feet wide between the concrete retaining wall and the mass of floating refuse.

"Keep us off the wall," Joe grunted, using the tiller to guide us.

We slid into the channel. It was like entering a canyon of filth. On our left, a wall of wet mattresses and tangled fishing nets towered over us. On our right, the slick concrete wall.

The smell was indescribable. It was a physical weight on my chest.

"I see something," Dave whispered, pointing into the trash wall. "Inside the refrigerator."

Embedded in the wall of junk was an old, doorless refrigerator, floating on its back. And curled inside it, like a hermit crab in a shell, was a Zom Zom.

It was pale, bloated, and covered in algae. It was missing an arm. It watched us glide by with milky, dead eyes.

"Don't touch it," I whispered. "Don't even breathe at it."

03. The Ambush

We were halfway through the gap when the raft lurched.

SCREEEEEEECH.

Something metal in the trash pile snagged the side of our pontoons. We stopped dead.

"We're hooked," Joe growled. "Dave, get the pole. Push us off."

Dave leaned over the side, jamming his oar into the trash pile to lever us free. He pushed. The trash shifted.

Suddenly, the trash pile erupted.

It wasn't just garbage. The fishing nets were tangled around bodies. Three Zom Zoms, woven into the debris like structural support beams, surged forward.

One of them—wearing a "World's Best Dad" t-shirt—lunged out of a tangle of garden hoses. It grabbed Dave's oar.

"Let go!" Dave shrieked, playing tug-of-war with the undead.

"Dave! Drop the oar!" I yelled.

But another hand shot out of the water—a skeletal, muddy hand—and grabbed the side of our raft. Then another. They were pulling themselves out of the garbage, trying to climb onto The Rusty Bucket.

04. Spicy Wind Machine

Buster went berserk. BARK! BARK! BARK!

The giant Rottweiler lunged at the railing, snapping at the muddy fingers.

"The torch!" Brenda yelled. "Joe, the torch!"

Joe didn't hesitate. He clicked the starter on his propane-leaf-blower contraption.

WHOOOOSH.

A jet of blue flame roared out. He swept it across the side of the trash barge. Plastic melted instantly. The fishing nets snapped. The Zom Zoms didn't scream, but their skin blistered and popped. They recoiled from the heat, releasing the raft.

"PUSH!" Brenda screamed.

I jammed my stick against a burning tire and shoved with everything I had. The raft groaned, scraped, and then—pop—we broke free.

We drifted out of the narrow channel and into open water, leaving behind a smoking, smelling wall of burning garbage and angry groans.

"Note to self," Dave panted, clutching his chest. "Recycling is dangerous."

05. River Loot Table

Items we fished out of the water with a net while drifting, because we are scavengers now. While we waited for the engine to cool down, Brenda insisted on "resource acquisition."

ITEM CONDITION UTILITY NOTES
Cooler (Styrofoam) Damaged HIGH Contained six cans of generic root beer and a sandwich that was now a biology experiment. Kept the root beer.

Mannequin Head Terrifying NONE We thought it was a severed head. Dave screamed. We threw it back.

STATUS UPDATE: The engine is running again, but it’s making a knocking sound.

We are approaching the Boom Bridge.

It’s huge. It spans the river like a steel skeleton. And right in the middle, hanging from the central support... is a military Humvee, dangling by a cable.

"That doesn't look safe," I said.

"We have to go ashore," Joe said, cutting the engine. "We have to walk around the bridge on the bank. If we go under it, the vibration might set off the charges."

We are landing. On the muddy bank. Into the unknown.

Please Don't Sneeze

SYS_LOG // FILE: BOOM_BRIDGE_TRAP
[ C4: ARMED ] [ LASERS: ACTIVE ]

01. The Leviathan

  • Date: Thursday Afternoon
  • Mood: Muddy. Explosive. Very, very quiet.
  • Status: Crawling through slime under a ticking time bomb.

We beached The Rusty Bucket in the mud. The engine gave one final, choking cough and died. We drifted into the riverbank with a soft squelch. We were in the shadow of the Boom Bridge.

Up close, the bridge was terrifying. It was a massive steel leviathan, rusted and groaning in the wind. And hanging from the center span, swaying gently like a morbid pendulum, was that military Humvee. It creaked. Eeee-errrr. Eeee-errrr.

"Everybody off," Joe whispered. "Quietly. If you drop a wrench, we all turn into pink mist."

We stepped off the barge and sank shin-deep into the foulest mud I have ever encountered. It smelled like ancient river secrets.

02. The Red Blink

"FREEZE," Brenda hissed.

We froze.

About ten feet in front of us, attached to the massive concrete pillar of the bridge, was a small black box.

> A red light blinked on it. Blink. Blink. Blink.

"C4," Joe noted softly. "Plastic explosives. Rigged to a proximity sensor."

"And there," Dave pointed, his finger trembling.

Spanning the gap between the two main pillars, hovering just inches above the water, were faint red lines. Lasers.

"Tripwires," Brenda whispered. "If a boat tries to go under, it breaks the beam. The charge detonates. The bridge collapses. The Humvee falls. The river gets dammed by rubble."

"Efficient," Joe grunted. "Cruel. But efficient."

03. The Shimmy

There was a narrow—very narrow—strip of dry land between the laser grid and the steep, concrete embankment of the shore. A path maybe two feet wide.

"We have to shimmy," I said. "Single file. Hug the wall."

"I’ll go first," Joe said. "Buster, heel. If you chase a squirrel now, buddy, we’re done." Buster seemed to sense the danger. He lowered his head and followed Joe.

We moved like mimes.

Step. Squelch. Pause.

Step. Squelch. Pause.

I was directly under the hanging Humvee now. I looked up. I could see the frayed steel cable holding it. I could see the loose tire spinning lazily. Creak.

A bolt fell from the Humvee. It tumbled down fifty feet. It hit the water ten feet away from us. Ploop.

We all flinched. The red light on the C4 box blinked faster for a second, then slowed down.

Dave stepped on a twig. SNAP.

The laser grid flickered.

"Dave!" I hissed. "Levitate if you have to! Just don't touch the ground!"

We shimmied past the final pillar. We crawled up the muddy bank on the other side, hauling ourselves into the tall grass. We collapsed, chests heaving, looking back at the bridge. It stood silent. Waiting for the next idiot boat.

04. Trap Schematic

Brenda sketched this in the mud to show us exactly how close we came to vaporization.

Trap Mechanics

Component Function
Laser Grid Detects any vessel taller than a kayak passing between pillars. Break the beam -> BOOM.
C4 Sensors Vibration sensors detect heavy impacts on the pillars (like a barge hitting them). Impact -> BOOM.
Humvee If supports weaken, cable snaps, dropping the 6,000lb truck into water. Wave triggers secondary mines.

05. Engineering Debate

Parties: Joe (Junkyard Engineer) vs. Brenda (Corporate Risk Analyst)

Location: Hiding in the tall grass, 50 yards past the bridge.

JOE: "I’m telling you, that rivet pattern is all wrong. The military over-torqued the charges. If that C4 blows, it doesn't just drop the span; it shears the abutment."

BRENDA: "That is the point, Joseph. Total denial of area. It is a standard scorched-earth protocol."

JOE: "It's sloppy work. Look at the rust on the cable holding the Humvee. That’s not a load-bearing cable. That’s a tow winch cable. It’s got a tensile strength of maybe 8,000 pounds. That truck weighs 6,000 dry."

BRENDA: "So you are suggesting the trap is unstable?"

JOE: "I'm suggesting that bridge is gonna blow up whether we touch it or not. The wind is gonna blow hard enough one day, snap that cable, drop the truck, and Kaboom."

BRENDA: "Then we should increase our distance immediately."

JOE: "Or... we could shoot the cable."

BRENDA: "Excuse me?"

JOE: "If we shoot the cable from here, the truck drops. It sets off the mines. The bridge blows. It kills every zombie on the other side of the river."

"David, give Joe the Nerf gun. He is not allowed to have real ideas anymore," Brenda stated firmly.

06. The Ascent

We left the bridge intact (for now). We climbed the embankment and found ourselves on a paved road running parallel to the river.

"The Narrows are ahead," Joe said, pointing to where the river cut between two high stone cliffs. "But we're on foot now. We follow the road."

"Look," Dave said.

Parked on the side of the road, covered in dust, was a vehicle. Not a car.

A TOUR BUS.

Painted on the side, in peeling letters: "THE ELDERLY EXPLORERS - SENIOR CENTER DAY TRIPS."

The door was open.

"Transport," Brenda said. "Check for keys. Check for... occupants."

We approached the bus.

01. The Vehicle

  • Date: Thursday Afternoon
  • Mood: Smelling of lavender and diesel fumes.
  • Status: Behind the wheel of a 40-foot retirement community on wheels.

The bus sat on the side of the road like a beached whale made of beige aluminum.

"THE ELDERLY EXPLORERS"
Day Trips! Casinos! Mystery Tours!

This was definitely a mystery tour.

"Stay sharp," Joe grunted, hefting his pipe wrench. "Buses have lots of hiding spots. Under seats. The luggage bays. The bathroom."

We approached the open door. The steps were covered in non-slip rubber matting. A sign taped to the door read: “Please Have Exact Change for the Driver. NO Shouting.”

02. The Sweep

We stepped inside. The air was thick and stale. It smelled intensely of peppermint, Vicks VapoRub, and that distinct, dusty smell of old upholstery that hasn't seen fresh air in a decade.

IT WAS EMPTY.

But it was a sad kind of empty. There were walkers abandoned in the aisles. A cane hung from a seat back. A half-finished crossword puzzle was on a tray table, the pen still resting on 17-Across ("Four-letter word for end of life").

"Clear right," Brenda announced, moving methodically down the aisle, keyboard shield raised.

"Clear left," I whispered, stepping over a spilled purse full of hard candies.

Dave refused to enter past the driver's seat. He stood by the door, holding the Nerf gun and Buster’s leash, vibrating with anxiety.

"It’s too quiet. It’s the quietest bus in history."

03. The Loo

We reached the back. The tiny bathroom door was closed. A sign on it said “OCCUPIED.”

Joe nodded at me. You open it. I’ll swing.

I grabbed the handle. It was locked. Joe stepped back and kicked the door near the handle. CRACK.

The door swung open.

It wasn't an elderly explorer. It was the bus driver. A man in a short-sleeve uniform shirt and a clip-on tie. He had turned in the tiny space, wedged between the toilet and the sink.

HE LUNGED OUT, SNARLING, ARMS FLAILING.

CLANG!

Joe didn't even blink. He swung the pipe wrench sideways, connecting with the driver's helmet-like hair. The Zom Zom bounced off a seat and collapsed into the aisle, twitching.

"Ticket punched," Joe muttered.

04. The Ignition

While we dealt with the driver, Brenda was in the cockpit.

"Keys are present," she called out. "Diesel pusher engine. It’s a tank."

She turned the key.

Rrrr-Rrrr-Rrrr... Nothing.

"Glow plugs need to warm up," Joe shouted from the back. "Give it a second!"

Brenda waited. She turned it again.

Rrrr-Rrrr-KA-CHUG-CHUG-CHUG-CHUG!

The massive diesel engine roared to life. Black smoke belched from the exhaust pipe outside. The whole bus vibrated violently.

"It's loud," I yelled over the engine noise.

"It's armor," Brenda yelled back, revving the engine. "Everybody buckle up. We are taking the scenic route."

Mister Whiskers immediately jumped onto the dashboard and curled up in the sun, accepting his new role as Bus Captain.

05. The Geriatric Loot Drop

While Joe checked the tires, we raided the overhead bins and seat pockets. We struck gold in the most unexpected way.

ITEM QUANTITY UTILITY NOTES
Knitting Needles (Steel) 12 pairs HIGH (Weapon) Brenda is taping these to her shins as secondary armor. Also good for stabbing eyes.
Werther's Originals ~5 lbs MED (Morale) The currency of the new world. Good for energy. Bad for teeth.
Compression Socks 30 pairs HIGH Great for long hikes to avoid deep vein thrombosis while fleeing the horde.
Bingo Dabbers (Red ink) 50+ LOW (Artistic) Dave is using them to draw "scary faces" on the bus windows to intimidate zombies.
Magnifying Glasses 10 MED Can be used to start fires with the sun. Or read tiny warnings on soup cans.
"Grabber" Tools 4 HIGH Those claw-on-a-stick things for reaching high shelves. Perfect for looting without getting too close.
Rain Bonnets (Plastic) 100+ NEGATIVE Useless. We look ridiculous in them.

06. Tactical Map: The Narrows

Brenda found an old road atlas under the driver's seat. It’s the only road between the river and the cliffs leading to the Stadium.

Threat Assessment

  • (A) Blind Curve: If a semi-truck is jackknifed around that corner, we won't see it until we hit it.
  • (B) The Overpass: Zom Zoms love falling off things. An "aerial bombardment" of bodies onto the bus roof is highly likely.
  • (C) Rockslide Zone: If the road is blocked by rocks, the bus cannot turn around. We will be trapped in a metal tube.

STATUS UPDATE: We are rolling. The bus handles like a drunken elephant.

  • > Joe is sitting in the front jump-seat with Buster, holding his wrench.
  • > Dave is in the back, building a fort out of adult diapers.
  • > I am co-pilot, feeding Brenda hard candies to keep her rage focused on the road.

We are entering The Narrows. The cliffs are rising up on both sides, blocking out the sun. It’s getting dark in here.

Speed 3: Geriatric Drift

Thursday, Late Afternoon // Mood: Claustrophobic

"The Narrows" was aptly named. It felt less like driving a bus and more like shoving a sausage into a very tight casing.

Obstacle A: The Blind Curve

Brenda didn't slow down. She just laid on the air horn. HOOOOOOOONK! We hit five Zom Zoms. It felt like driving over very large, soft speed bumps.

Obstacle B: The Overpass

It sounded like hail, if hailstones weighed 180 pounds and wore business casual. A leg punched right through an emergency escape hatch.

Current Status: The bus is smoking. Missing mirrors. Engine idling roughly. Bursting out of a canyon.

Official Directive

TO ALL OCCUPANTS: Failure to comply will result in demerits or ejection from the vehicle at speed.

  • 1. SEATBELTS: We will be hitting pedestrians. Do not become a projectile.
  • 2. NOISE: No singing sea shanties. The engine is loud enough.
  • 3. THE CAT: Mister Whiskers is on the dashboard for morale. Do not touch him. He is working.

— Brenda (Acting Transport Director)

"She didn't downshift. You gotta respect the transmission, lady. This is a Detroit Diesel 6V92... She drives like she hates the road and wants to punish it."

SYS_LOG // FILE: THUNDERDOME_CLOSED
[ ENGINE: DEAD ] [ STATUS: TRESPASSING ]

01. Engine Failure

  • Date: Thursday, Twilight (The spooky hour)
  • Mood: Deeply inconvenienced and highly suspicious.
  • Status: Trespassing on federal property.

The tour bus gave one final, dramatic shudder and died.

We didn't turn it off. The engine just finally decided it had experienced enough abuse for one lifetime and suffocated in a cloud of its own black smoke. We were parked just outside the outer perimeter fence of the Stadium.

It was supposed to be our salvation. I was promised (by my own delusional hope) a hot shower, a cot, and maybe a nice National Guardsman handing me a bowl of chili.

INSTEAD, WE GOT A GHOST TOWN.

The massive stadium lights, the ones Dave saw from the drone, were completely dark. The parking lot was a maze of olive-green military tents, shipping containers, and concrete barricades. But nothing was moving. The only sound was the wind flapping the loose canvas of a command tent.

02. The Management Disagreement

Dave peeked over the top of his diaper fort. "Nope. No. Absolutely not. Put it in reverse, Brenda."

"The transmission is fused, David," Brenda replied, unbuckling her seatbelt and grabbing her keyboard shield. "We are committed."

Tropological Warning

"It’s the classic trope!" Dave shrieked, his voice cracking. "The Safe Zone is never safe! It’s either overrun by super-zombies, or it’s run by a charismatic psychopath with an eyepatch who makes people fight in a pit! I don't have the upper body strength for pit fighting, Brenda!"

"David," Brenda said, her voice dropping to that terrifying HR-warning register. "We have expended maximum fuel and structural vehicle integrity to reach this coordinate. We are not leaving without a Return on Investment. We are going in to audit their supplies."

Joe racked the bolt on a heavy tire iron he’d pulled from the bus's undercarriage. "I'm with the suit. Buster needs water. Real water, not that river sludge."

Mister Whiskers stretched, hopped off the dashboard, and trotted down the bus stairs. He casually walked through the open military gates.

"Well," I sighed, grabbing my pointy stick. "The cat has claimed it. Let’s go."

03. The Forward Operating Base

We walked through the checkpoint. The barricades were intact. The razor wire was undisturbed. There were no signs of a massive battle. No bullet casings blanketing the ground. No... bodies.

It just looked like everyone stood up in the middle of lunch and walked away.

We crept through the rows of tents.

"This is spooky," Joe muttered, keeping Buster on a tight, short leash. "Military doesn't just abandon gear like this. Look."

He pointed to a Humvee parked near a medical tent. The keys were still in the ignition. A half-eaten protein bar was resting on the dashboard.

04. The "ROI" Looting Checklist

Before we went deeper, Brenda made us align on our strategic objectives. We are no longer scavenging for Gouda and hard candies. We are in the big leagues now.

  • MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat): Specifically the ones with the Jalapeño Cheese Spread. I will fight Dave for it.
  • Tactical Gear: Kevlar vests, helmets, or anything that teeth cannot pierce. Vogue magazines are losing their structural integrity.
  • Communications: A working military radio to find out if there's a real safe zone left.
  • Medical Supplies: Antibiotics, bandages, and maybe some ibuprofen for the massive headache I’ve had since Tuesday.
  • Actual Weapons: My stick is an embarrassment to humanity.

05. The Command Tent

We reached the center of the encampment, right at the base of the massive concrete stadium walls. The largest tent—the Command Center—had its flaps tied open.

A faint, rhythmic hiss of static was coming from inside.

I swallowed hard. I looked at Brenda. She nodded, raising her keyboard. Joe stepped up beside her, tire iron ready. We slipped inside.

The tent was filled with folding tables, maps of the city covered in red Sharpie X's, and a bank of radio equipment. One of the radios was on, cycling through dead channels. Ksssssh... Ksssssh...

"Jackpot," Brenda whispered, moving toward the radios.

"Wait," Joe said. The hair on his arms was standing up. Buster was emitting a low, continuous growl from deep in his chest.

THEN WE HEARD IT.

It wasn't the wet, squishy Zom. Zom. Zom. we were used to. It was muffled. Metallic. Heavy.

CLUNK. Zom. CLUNK. Zom.

06. The Juggernaut

From the dark back corner of the tent, behind an overturned tactical map board, a figure stepped out.

It was a Zom Zom. But this wasn't Gary from accounting in a polo shirt. This was a soldier.

And he was wearing full, head-to-toe riot gear. Kevlar body armor, thick neck and arm guards, and a reinforced helmet with a thick polycarbonate face shield pulled down.

His dead eyes stared at us through the scratched plastic. His mouth moved behind the visor, smearing dark blood against the inside of the glass.

My rusty scissors-on-a-stick wouldn't even scratch this guy. Brenda's keyboard would shatter.

The Juggernaut Zom took a heavy, clanking step toward us.

And from outside the tent... came the sound of a dozen more heavy, clanking footsteps.
