"If you try to eat me, Buster eats you," he announced by way of greeting.
04. Apocalypse Games
While we waited for the situation to develop, we needed a morale boost to keep the panic at bay.

06. Bridge Intel
Recon Report: The Big Boom
The military rigged the bridge to blow. It is a chokepoint designed to contain the infection.
Threat Level: Lethal
"If you step on it... boom."
CURRENT STATUS: WE NEED A NEW PLAN.
THE H.M.S. TETANUS
The bridge is a bomb, rigged by the Army to keep the "sickos" out of the Safe Zone. Road travel is 0% viable. The current is too strong to swim, and the water is probably toxic sludge by now. We are building a boat.
01. The Merger
Brenda didn't look like a survivor anymore—she looked like a CEO closing a merger. She played the "Buster Card" perfectly to get Joe on board.
Joe's Price for the Build:
- Safety for Buster (The Rottweiler)
- Heartworm Medication
- Strict recognition of the "Chain-link Limitation"
"I can build you a barge," Joe said. "Ugly. Slow. But it floats."
02. Assembly Crew
Cue the 80s rock. Sparks are flying. Grease is everywhere.

TOMORROW, WE BECOME PIRATES.
The Maiden Voyage of the S.S. Tetanus
01. The Launch
- Timestamp: Thursday Morning, Dawn
- Mood: Wet. Loud. Deeply regrettable.
We launched at first light.
The river behind Joe’s scrapyard was covered in a thick, oily fog. It smelled like dead fish and old tires.
"If you fall in, I ain't fishing you out. The catfish in here have teeth now."
— Joe
With a mighty splash, the barge hit the water. It rocked violently side-to-side. We scrambled aboard, tossing Mister Whiskers and Buster onto the minivan seats.
02. The Roar
Warning: Extreme Noise Hazard
Joe grabbed the pull cord of the ancient Evinrude outboard. He ripped it hard.
CHUG-a-CHUG-a-sputter-DIE...
CHUG-a-CHUG-a-BLAM-ROAAAAAAR!
The engine didn't just start. It screamed. It sounded less like a boat motor and more like a chainsaw fighting a lawnmower inside a metal trash can.
STEALTH IS NO LONGER AN OPTION.
03. The Floaters
From the weeds, from behind abandoned docks, figures stumbled out. Zom Zoms, drawn by the noise, walked right off the edge and splashed into the water.
Field Observation: A bloated hand slapped onto the deck plates. A "Floater" in a faded business suit, swollen with water like a horrible balloon. Skin gray and sloughing off.
Brenda used her mechanical keyboard shield like a snowplow, jamming it against the Zom's chest.

05. The Shanty
Dave's Vocal Log:
"There once was a ship that was made of trash,
The motor roared with a terrible crash!
The river is black, the Zoms are green,
Oh blow, my bully boys, blow!"
Note: Crew cohesion did NOT increase by 14%. Dave was threatened with "chum" reclassification.
06. The Gap
We are past the first wave of Floaters. The engine is still running, somehow.
Up ahead, a massive island of floating trash blocks the middle of the river. Refrigerators, plastic bags, and unknown horrors.
Current Objective:
Navigate the Narrow Gap.
IT LOOKS AWFULLY TIGHT.
The Trashberg Titanic
[ RIVER: BLOCKED ] [ SMELL: BURNING HAIR ]
01. The Garbage Patch
- Date: Thursday Morning
- Mood: Nauseous.
- Status: Prying a diaper out of the boat propeller.
You know how people say, "One man's trash is another man's treasure?"
In the apocalypse, one man's trash is a floating island of horror that tries to eat your boat.
We approached The Garbage Patch. It spanned the entire width of the river, a festering mosaic of styrofoam coolers, driftwood, plastic bottles, and unidentifiable sludge.
"Cut the engine!" Joe hissed. "If the intake sucks up a plastic bag, we're dead in the water."
The roaring motor died. The silence that followed was heavy. We drifted toward the blockade, carried by the slow, oily current.
"We need to pole through," Brenda commanded. She grabbed a long piece of scrap pipe. I grabbed my stick. Dave grabbed a broken oar. We pushed against the wall of garbage. It felt squishy.
02. The Squeeze
There was a narrow gap near the eastern bank—a channel about five feet wide between the concrete retaining wall and the mass of floating refuse.
"Keep us off the wall," Joe grunted, using the tiller to guide us.
We slid into the channel. It was like entering a canyon of filth. On our left, a wall of wet mattresses and tangled fishing nets towered over us. On our right, the slick concrete wall.
"I see something," Dave whispered, pointing into the trash wall. "Inside the refrigerator."
Embedded in the wall of junk was an old, doorless refrigerator, floating on its back. And curled inside it, like a hermit crab in a shell, was a Zom Zom.
It was pale, bloated, and covered in algae. It was missing an arm. It watched us glide by with milky, dead eyes.
"Don't touch it," I whispered. "Don't even breathe at it."
03. The Ambush
We were halfway through the gap when the raft lurched.
SCREEEEEEECH.
Something metal in the trash pile snagged the side of our pontoons. We stopped dead.
"We're hooked," Joe growled. "Dave, get the pole. Push us off."
Dave leaned over the side, jamming his oar into the trash pile to lever us free. He pushed. The trash shifted.
Suddenly, the trash pile erupted.
It wasn't just garbage. The fishing nets were tangled around bodies. Three Zom Zoms, woven into the debris like structural support beams, surged forward.
One of them—wearing a "World's Best Dad" t-shirt—lunged out of a tangle of garden hoses. It grabbed Dave's oar.
"Let go!" Dave shrieked, playing tug-of-war with the undead.
"Dave! Drop the oar!" I yelled.
But another hand shot out of the water—a skeletal, muddy hand—and grabbed the side of our raft. Then another. They were pulling themselves out of the garbage, trying to climb onto The Rusty Bucket.
04. Spicy Wind Machine
Buster went berserk. BARK! BARK! BARK!
The giant Rottweiler lunged at the railing, snapping at the muddy fingers.
"The torch!" Brenda yelled. "Joe, the torch!"
Joe didn't hesitate. He clicked the starter on his propane-leaf-blower contraption.
A jet of blue flame roared out. He swept it across the side of the trash barge. Plastic melted instantly. The fishing nets snapped. The Zom Zoms didn't scream, but their skin blistered and popped. They recoiled from the heat, releasing the raft.
"PUSH!" Brenda screamed.
I jammed my stick against a burning tire and shoved with everything I had. The raft groaned, scraped, and then—pop—we broke free.
We drifted out of the narrow channel and into open water, leaving behind a smoking, smelling wall of burning garbage and angry groans.
"Note to self," Dave panted, clutching his chest. "Recycling is dangerous."
05. River Loot Table
Items we fished out of the water with a net while drifting, because we are scavengers now. While we waited for the engine to cool down, Brenda insisted on "resource acquisition."
| ITEM | CONDITION | UTILITY | NOTES |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cooler (Styrofoam) | Damaged | HIGH | Contained six cans of generic root beer and a sandwich that was now a biology experiment. Kept the root beer. |
| Fishing Hat | Wet | COSMETIC | Dave is wearing it now. He thinks it makes him look rugged. It makes him look like a lost toddler. |
| Plastic Bag (Sealed) | Good | LEGENDARY | Inside was a pristine, dry pack of playing cards. Morale +10. |
| Mannequin Head | Terrifying | NONE | We thought it was a severed head. Dave screamed. We threw it back. |
| License Plate | Rusty | WEAPON | Brenda sharpened the edge on the concrete wall. It is now a shiv. |
| Garden Gnome | Heavy | AMMO | Good for throwing at swimmers. |
06. Buster's Diary

> ENTRY: THE WET MOVING FLOOR
I do not like the Wet Moving Floor.
The Metal Man (Joe) put me on this thing. It wobbles. It smells like the Bad Water. I cannot find a place to put my paws where the ground stays still.
The Pack is nervous.
[ THE PACK ]
The Loud Lady (Brenda): She smells like sharp markers. She stands very tall. She is the Alpha, I think.
The Stick Man (Narrator): He gives me ear scratches when the Metal Man isn't looking. He smells like old milk (cheese). I like him.
The Small Nervous One (Dave): He smells like fear and fake sugar. He holds the Small Soft Gun. It does nothing. He is a puppy. I must protect him.
The Sharp Fluff (Mister Whiskers): The enemy. He sits on the high box. He looks at me with his yellow eyes. He knows I cannot reach him. One day, the water will splash him. I will laugh.
[ THE BAD SMELLS (ZOMBIES) ]
They are in the water. They are wet and wrong. They do not smell like people. They smell like meat that has been in the sun too long.
I bit one. It tasted like mud.
[ THE INCIDENT ]
The Metal Man used the Spicy Wind Machine (Flamethrower). It was loud. I hid under the seat.
I want to go back to the Yard. I want my tire. The water is bad.
07. Landfall
STATUS UPDATE: The engine is running again, but it’s making a knocking sound.
We are approaching the Boom Bridge.
It’s huge. It spans the river like a steel skeleton. And right in the middle, hanging from the central support... is a military Humvee, dangling by a cable.
"That doesn't look safe," I said.
"We have to go ashore," Joe said, cutting the engine. "We have to walk around the bridge on the bank. If we go under it, the vibration might set off the charges."
Please Don't Sneeze
[ C4: ARMED ] [ LASERS: ACTIVE ]
01. The Leviathan
- Date: Thursday Afternoon
- Mood: Muddy. Explosive. Very, very quiet.
- Status: Crawling through slime under a ticking time bomb.
We beached The Rusty Bucket in the mud. The engine gave one final, choking cough and died. We drifted into the riverbank with a soft squelch. We were in the shadow of the Boom Bridge.
Up close, the bridge was terrifying. It was a massive steel leviathan, rusted and groaning in the wind. And hanging from the center span, swaying gently like a morbid pendulum, was that military Humvee. It creaked. Eeee-errrr. Eeee-errrr.
"Everybody off," Joe whispered. "Quietly. If you drop a wrench, we all turn into pink mist."
We stepped off the barge and sank shin-deep into the foulest mud I have ever encountered. It smelled like ancient river secrets.
02. The Red Blink
"FREEZE," Brenda hissed.
We froze.
About ten feet in front of us, attached to the massive concrete pillar of the bridge, was a small black box.
> A red light blinked on it. Blink. Blink. Blink.
"C4," Joe noted softly. "Plastic explosives. Rigged to a proximity sensor."
"And there," Dave pointed, his finger trembling.
Spanning the gap between the two main pillars, hovering just inches above the water, were faint red lines. Lasers.
"Tripwires," Brenda whispered. "If a boat tries to go under, it breaks the beam. The charge detonates. The bridge collapses. The Humvee falls. The river gets dammed by rubble."
"Efficient," Joe grunted. "Cruel. But efficient."
03. The Shimmy
There was a narrow—very narrow—strip of dry land between the laser grid and the steep, concrete embankment of the shore. A path maybe two feet wide.
"We have to shimmy," I said. "Single file. Hug the wall."
"I’ll go first," Joe said. "Buster, heel. If you chase a squirrel now, buddy, we’re done." Buster seemed to sense the danger. He lowered his head and followed Joe.
We moved like mimes.
Step. Squelch. Pause.
Step. Squelch. Pause.
I was directly under the hanging Humvee now. I looked up. I could see the frayed steel cable holding it. I could see the loose tire spinning lazily. Creak.
A bolt fell from the Humvee. It tumbled down fifty feet. It hit the water ten feet away from us. Ploop.
We all flinched. The red light on the C4 box blinked faster for a second, then slowed down.
Dave stepped on a twig. SNAP.
The laser grid flickered.
"Dave!" I hissed. "Levitate if you have to! Just don't touch the ground!"
We shimmied past the final pillar. We crawled up the muddy bank on the other side, hauling ourselves into the tall grass. We collapsed, chests heaving, looking back at the bridge. It stood silent. Waiting for the next idiot boat.
04. Trap Schematic
Brenda sketched this in the mud to show us exactly how close we came to vaporization.

|---|---|
| Laser Grid | Detects any vessel taller than a kayak passing between pillars. Break the beam -> BOOM. |

| Humvee | If supports weaken, cable snaps, dropping the 6,000lb truck into water. Wave triggers secondary mines. |
05. Engineering Debate
Parties: Joe (Junkyard Engineer) vs. Brenda (Corporate Risk Analyst)
Location: Hiding in the tall grass, 50 yards past the bridge.
JOE: "I’m telling you, that rivet pattern is all wrong. The military over-torqued the charges. If that C4 blows, it doesn't just drop the span; it shears the abutment."
BRENDA: "That is the point, Joseph. Total denial of area. It is a standard scorched-earth protocol."
JOE: "It's sloppy work. Look at the rust on the cable holding the Humvee. That’s not a load-bearing cable. That’s a tow winch cable. It’s got a tensile strength of maybe 8,000 pounds. That truck weighs 6,000 dry."
BRENDA: "So you are suggesting the trap is unstable?"
JOE: "I'm suggesting that bridge is gonna blow up whether we touch it or not. The wind is gonna blow hard enough one day, snap that cable, drop the truck, and Kaboom."
BRENDA: "Then we should increase our distance immediately."
JOE: "Or... we could shoot the cable."
BRENDA: "Excuse me?"
JOE: "If we shoot the cable from here, the truck drops. It sets off the mines. The bridge blows. It kills every zombie on the other side of the river."
"David, give Joe the Nerf gun. He is not allowed to have real ideas anymore," Brenda stated firmly.
06. The Ascent
We left the bridge intact (for now). We climbed the embankment and found ourselves on a paved road running parallel to the river.
"The Narrows are ahead," Joe said, pointing to where the river cut between two high stone cliffs. "But we're on foot now. We follow the road."
"Look," Dave said.
Parked on the side of the road, covered in dust, was a vehicle. Not a car.
A TOUR BUS.
Painted on the side, in peeling letters: "THE ELDERLY EXPLORERS - SENIOR CENTER DAY TRIPS."
The door was open.
"Transport," Brenda said. "Check for keys. Check for... occupants."
We approached the bus.
The Bingo Bus to Hell
[ FUEL: DIESEL ] [ CARGO: WERTHER'S ]
01. The Vehicle
- Date: Thursday Afternoon
- Mood: Smelling of lavender and diesel fumes.
- Status: Behind the wheel of a 40-foot retirement community on wheels.
The bus sat on the side of the road like a beached whale made of beige aluminum.
Day Trips! Casinos! Mystery Tours!
This was definitely a mystery tour.
"Stay sharp," Joe grunted, hefting his pipe wrench. "Buses have lots of hiding spots. Under seats. The luggage bays. The bathroom."
We approached the open door. The steps were covered in non-slip rubber matting. A sign taped to the door read: “Please Have Exact Change for the Driver. NO Shouting.”
02. The Sweep
We stepped inside. The air was thick and stale. It smelled intensely of peppermint, Vicks VapoRub, and that distinct, dusty smell of old upholstery that hasn't seen fresh air in a decade.
IT WAS EMPTY.
But it was a sad kind of empty. There were walkers abandoned in the aisles. A cane hung from a seat back. A half-finished crossword puzzle was on a tray table, the pen still resting on 17-Across ("Four-letter word for end of life").
"Clear right," Brenda announced, moving methodically down the aisle, keyboard shield raised.
"Clear left," I whispered, stepping over a spilled purse full of hard candies.
Dave refused to enter past the driver's seat. He stood by the door, holding the Nerf gun and Buster’s leash, vibrating with anxiety.
"It’s too quiet. It’s the quietest bus in history."
03. The Loo
We reached the back. The tiny bathroom door was closed. A sign on it said “OCCUPIED.”
Joe nodded at me. You open it. I’ll swing.
I grabbed the handle. It was locked. Joe stepped back and kicked the door near the handle. CRACK.
The door swung open.
It wasn't an elderly explorer. It was the bus driver. A man in a short-sleeve uniform shirt and a clip-on tie. He had turned in the tiny space, wedged between the toilet and the sink.
HE LUNGED OUT, SNARLING, ARMS FLAILING.
CLANG!
Joe didn't even blink. He swung the pipe wrench sideways, connecting with the driver's helmet-like hair. The Zom Zom bounced off a seat and collapsed into the aisle, twitching.
"Ticket punched," Joe muttered.
04. The Ignition
While we dealt with the driver, Brenda was in the cockpit.
"Keys are present," she called out. "Diesel pusher engine. It’s a tank."
She turned the key.
Rrrr-Rrrr-Rrrr... Nothing.
"Glow plugs need to warm up," Joe shouted from the back. "Give it a second!"
Brenda waited. She turned it again.
The massive diesel engine roared to life. Black smoke belched from the exhaust pipe outside. The whole bus vibrated violently.
"It's loud," I yelled over the engine noise.
"It's armor," Brenda yelled back, revving the engine. "Everybody buckle up. We are taking the scenic route."
Mister Whiskers immediately jumped onto the dashboard and curled up in the sun, accepting his new role as Bus Captain.
05. The Geriatric Loot Drop
While Joe checked the tires, we raided the overhead bins and seat pockets. We struck gold in the most unexpected way.
| ITEM | QUANTITY | UTILITY | NOTES |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knitting Needles (Steel) | 12 pairs | HIGH (Weapon) | Brenda is taping these to her shins as secondary armor. Also good for stabbing eyes. |
| Werther's Originals | ~5 lbs | MED (Morale) | The currency of the new world. Good for energy. Bad for teeth. |
| Compression Socks | 30 pairs | HIGH | Great for long hikes to avoid deep vein thrombosis while fleeing the horde. |
| Bingo Dabbers (Red ink) | 50+ | LOW (Artistic) | Dave is using them to draw "scary faces" on the bus windows to intimidate zombies. |
| Magnifying Glasses | 10 | MED | Can be used to start fires with the sun. Or read tiny warnings on soup cans. |
| "Grabber" Tools | 4 | HIGH | Those claw-on-a-stick things for reaching high shelves. Perfect for looting without getting too close. |
| Rain Bonnets (Plastic) | 100+ | NEGATIVE | Useless. We look ridiculous in them. |
06. Tactical Map: The Narrows

Brenda didn't slow down. She just laid on the air horn. HOOOOOOOONK! We hit five Zom Zoms. It felt like driving over very large, soft speed bumps.
Obstacle B: The Overpass
It sounded like hail, if hailstones weighed 180 pounds and wore business casual. A leg punched right through an emergency escape hatch.
Official Directive
TO ALL OCCUPANTS: Failure to comply will result in demerits or ejection from the vehicle at speed.
- 1. SEATBELTS: We will be hitting pedestrians. Do not become a projectile.
- 2. NOISE: No singing sea shanties. The engine is loud enough.
- 3. THE CAT: Mister Whiskers is on the dashboard for morale. Do not touch him. He is working.
— Brenda (Acting Transport Director)
"She didn't downshift. You gotta respect the transmission, lady. This is a Detroit Diesel 6V92... She drives like she hates the road and wants to punish it."
— Joe the Mechanic
Welcome to the Thunderdome
[ ENGINE: DEAD ] [ STATUS: TRESPASSING ]
01. Engine Failure
- Date: Thursday, Twilight (The spooky hour)
- Mood: Deeply inconvenienced and highly suspicious.
- Status: Trespassing on federal property.
The tour bus gave one final, dramatic shudder and died.
We didn't turn it off. The engine just finally decided it had experienced enough abuse for one lifetime and suffocated in a cloud of its own black smoke. We were parked just outside the outer perimeter fence of the Stadium.
It was supposed to be our salvation. I was promised (by my own delusional hope) a hot shower, a cot, and maybe a nice National Guardsman handing me a bowl of chili.
INSTEAD, WE GOT A GHOST TOWN.
The massive stadium lights, the ones Dave saw from the drone, were completely dark. The parking lot was a maze of olive-green military tents, shipping containers, and concrete barricades. But nothing was moving. The only sound was the wind flapping the loose canvas of a command tent.
02. The Management Disagreement
Dave peeked over the top of his diaper fort. "Nope. No. Absolutely not. Put it in reverse, Brenda."
"The transmission is fused, David," Brenda replied, unbuckling her seatbelt and grabbing her keyboard shield. "We are committed."
Tropological Warning
"It’s the classic trope!" Dave shrieked, his voice cracking. "The Safe Zone is never safe! It’s either overrun by super-zombies, or it’s run by a charismatic psychopath with an eyepatch who makes people fight in a pit! I don't have the upper body strength for pit fighting, Brenda!"
"David," Brenda said, her voice dropping to that terrifying HR-warning register. "We have expended maximum fuel and structural vehicle integrity to reach this coordinate. We are not leaving without a Return on Investment. We are going in to audit their supplies."
Joe racked the bolt on a heavy tire iron he’d pulled from the bus's undercarriage. "I'm with the suit. Buster needs water. Real water, not that river sludge."
Mister Whiskers stretched, hopped off the dashboard, and trotted down the bus stairs. He casually walked through the open military gates.
"Well," I sighed, grabbing my pointy stick. "The cat has claimed it. Let’s go."
03. The Forward Operating Base
We walked through the checkpoint. The barricades were intact. The razor wire was undisturbed. There were no signs of a massive battle. No bullet casings blanketing the ground. No... bodies.
We crept through the rows of tents.
"This is spooky," Joe muttered, keeping Buster on a tight, short leash. "Military doesn't just abandon gear like this. Look."
He pointed to a Humvee parked near a medical tent. The keys were still in the ignition. A half-eaten protein bar was resting on the dashboard.

> "They evacuated. Rapidly. But what prompted it?"
04. The "ROI" Looting Checklist
Before we went deeper, Brenda made us align on our strategic objectives. We are no longer scavenging for Gouda and hard candies. We are in the big leagues now.
- MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat): Specifically the ones with the Jalapeño Cheese Spread. I will fight Dave for it.
- Tactical Gear: Kevlar vests, helmets, or anything that teeth cannot pierce. Vogue magazines are losing their structural integrity.
- Communications: A working military radio to find out if there's a real safe zone left.
- Medical Supplies: Antibiotics, bandages, and maybe some ibuprofen for the massive headache I’ve had since Tuesday.
- Actual Weapons: My stick is an embarrassment to humanity.
05. The Command Tent
We reached the center of the encampment, right at the base of the massive concrete stadium walls. The largest tent—the Command Center—had its flaps tied open.
A faint, rhythmic hiss of static was coming from inside.
I swallowed hard. I looked at Brenda. She nodded, raising her keyboard. Joe stepped up beside her, tire iron ready. We slipped inside.
The tent was filled with folding tables, maps of the city covered in red Sharpie X's, and a bank of radio equipment. One of the radios was on, cycling through dead channels. Ksssssh... Ksssssh...
"Jackpot," Brenda whispered, moving toward the radios.
"Wait," Joe said. The hair on his arms was standing up. Buster was emitting a low, continuous growl from deep in his chest.
THEN WE HEARD IT.
It wasn't the wet, squishy Zom. Zom. Zom. we were used to. It was muffled. Metallic. Heavy.
06. The Juggernaut
From the dark back corner of the tent, behind an overturned tactical map board, a figure stepped out.
It was a Zom Zom. But this wasn't Gary from accounting in a polo shirt. This was a soldier.
And he was wearing full, head-to-toe riot gear. Kevlar body armor, thick neck and arm guards, and a reinforced helmet with a thick polycarbonate face shield pulled down.
His dead eyes stared at us through the scratched plastic. His mouth moved behind the visor, smearing dark blood against the inside of the glass.
My rusty scissors-on-a-stick wouldn't even scratch this guy. Brenda's keyboard would shatter.
The Juggernaut Zom took a heavy, clanking step toward us.
And from outside the tent... came the sound of a dozen more heavy, clanking footsteps.
