Stop Strangers From AirDropping You Memes: Lock AirDrop to Contacts Only in 30 Seconds
You're on the train, minding your business, when your iPhone lights up with a photo from someone named "xX_PhoneDestroyer_Xx." That's AirDrop harassment — and the fix takes less than a minute.
🎯 The 30-Second Fix
- Open Control Center (swipe down from the top-right corner).
- Touch and hold the connectivity panel (the box with Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth).
- Tap AirDrop.
- Select Contacts Only. Done — strangers can no longer see your phone.
Prefer the long way? It's also in Settings → General → AirDrop. Same three options, same result.
🧐 Know Your Three Settings
- Receiving Off — total lockdown. Nobody can AirDrop you. Use it in crowded places if you want zero interruptions.
- Contacts Only ✅ — the everyday default. Only people in your contacts can find you (they need your Apple Account email or phone number saved).
- Everyone for 10 Minutes — for the coworker or friend who isn't in your contacts. Apple auto-reverts it after 10 minutes so you can't forget and leave the door open.
🆕 Bonus: iOS 26's AirDrop Codes
On iOS 26.2 and later, there's a fourth option for the "not a contact, but not a stranger" crowd: shareable AirDrop codes. Generate a code in Settings → General → AirDrop → Manage Known AirDrop Contacts, and the other person gets 30 days of access — no contact card required, no "Everyone" window needed. Perfect for recurring clients and project collaborators.
✅ Set It and Forget It
- Keep Contacts Only as your permanent default.
- Switch to Everyone for 10 Minutes only for the moment you need it — Apple closes the window for you.
- Remember: you still accept or decline every transfer. Nothing lands on your phone without your tap.
