Your iPhone Battery Health Is Dipping: The Optimized Charging Fix

Every battery ages — but most iPhones age faster than they have to, because they sit at 100% all night. Apple's built-in charging tools slow that aging dramatically. Two minutes, zero apps, done.

Why your battery health number keeps falling

Lithium-ion batteries hate two things: heat, and sitting fully charged. Overnight charging pins your iPhone at 100% for hours — the exact condition that accelerates chemical aging. The result is that dreaded Maximum Capacity percentage ticking down. You cannot stop aging, but you can absolutely slow it.

The 2-minute fix: turn on the 80% limit

  • Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging.
  • Tap Charging, then choose 80% Limit. Your iPhone will now stop charging at 80% — the sweet spot for battery longevity.
  • On iPhone 15 and newer, you can also see your cycle count here — a battery is generally rated for around 1,000 cycles before dropping to 80% capacity.
  • Heading on a long travel day? Switch back to Optimized Battery Charging temporarily — it learns your routine and holds at 80% until just before you wake, then tops up to 100%.

Three more battery-aging slowdowns

  • Keep it cool. Charging under a pillow or in a hot car ages the battery faster than anything. If your iPhone feels warm while charging, move it somewhere ventilated.
  • Turn on Clean Energy Charging (same settings page) — your iPhone will prefer charging when the grid is cleaner, and the scheduling side-effect also smooths out overnight charging.
  • Avoid the 0%–100% rollercoaster. Shallow charges between roughly 20% and 80% stress the chemistry less than full drain-to-full cycles.

The takeaway

The 80% limit is the single highest-leverage battery setting on your iPhone. You will barely notice the missing 20% day to day — but your battery health number will thank you for years.
