How2 Mac: Master Hot Corners — 4 Gestures, Zero Clicks

Your mouse can take a break. Hot Corners turn the four corners of your Mac screen into instant action zones — one flick and you're in Mission Control, staring at a clean desktop, or locking up. Here's the 60-second setup.

What Hot Corners Actually Are

Every corner of your screen is a trigger zone. Flick your pointer into one and hold for a beat, and macOS fires the action you assigned — no click, no keyboard shortcut, no hunting through menus. Corners are effectively infinitely large targets, which makes them the fastest gesture on your Mac.

Most people leave all four corners set to nothing, which is like owning a sports car and never leaving second gear. If you liked our guide on mastering trackpad gestures, Hot Corners are the natural next step toward a click-free workflow.

Set Them Up in 60 Seconds

  1. Open System Settings (Apple menu, top-left).
  2. Go to Desktop & Dock, then scroll all the way down.
  3. Click the Hot Corners… button in the bottom-right.
  4. Use each dropdown to pick an action for the four corners.
  5. Click Done — your corners are live immediately.

Each dropdown also lets you hold a modifier key (⌘, ⌥, ⇧, or ⌃) while choosing — more on why that's the secret weapon in a moment.

The 4 Corner Assignments Worth Using

There are a dozen options, but four earn their corner every single day:

Corner Assignment Why it earns the spot
Top-left Mission Control Bird's-eye view of every open window — pair it with our Mission Control mastery guide and windows never get lost again.
Top-right Desktop Shoves every window aside so you can grab that file or screenshot instantly.
Bottom-left Lock Screen Walking away? One flick locks your Mac — faster than any shortcut, and your privacy thanks you.
Bottom-right Quick Note Jot a thought without breaking your flow; the note pops over whatever you're doing.

Start with just two corners if four feels like a lot. Muscle memory builds in about a day.

Pro Tips: Tame the Accidental Triggers

  • Require a modifier key: hold ⌘ (or ⌥) while picking the action, and the corner only fires with that key held. This kills 99% of accidental triggers.
  • Put Lock Screen somewhere safe: bottom corners are where your cursor rarely parks — never put Lock Screen top-right where menu-bar mousing lives.
  • Multi-display owners: each display gets its own corners, so assign consistently across screens.
  • Disable the troublemaker: if one corner keeps misfiring, set it to "–" and move on. Two great corners beat four flaky ones. If you live in Stage Manager, keep corners away from your thumbnail strip.

Your Corner Cheat Sheet

  • System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Hot Corners… is the only setup step.
  • Mission Control, Desktop, Lock Screen, Quick Note — the four worth assigning.
  • Hold a modifier key while choosing to make a corner misfire-proof.
