How2 Mac: Master Mission Control — Never Lose a Window Again
Somewhere on your Mac right now is a window you opened an hour ago and can't find. Mission Control ends that scavenger hunt forever — here's the 10-minute tour.
Mission Control in 10 Seconds
Press F3 (or swipe up with three fingers on the trackpad) and every open window spreads out in a single birds-eye view. That floating grid of tiny windows? That's Mission Control — macOS's command deck for your screen. Click any window to jump straight to it.
Once you build the muscle memory, you'll never minimize-then-hunt again.
The Moves That Matter
- Three-finger swipe up — open Mission Control; swipe down to dismiss.
- Three-finger swipe left/right — glide between full-screen Spaces and desktops.
- Drag a window to the top of the screen in Mission Control — drops it into its own Space.
- Drag one window onto another Space — reorganize your desktops by project.
- Hover a window, press Space — Quick Look preview without leaving Mission Control.
Spaces: Your Secret Second (and Third) Desktop
Spaces are virtual desktops living at the top of Mission Control. The winning setup: one Space for work apps, one for communication, one for fun. Full-screen an app and it gets its own Space automatically.
Assign apps to specific Spaces with a right-click on the Dock icon → Options → Assign To. Your browser always opens on Desktop 1, your chat apps on Desktop 2 — no more window archaeology.
| Goal | Move | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Find a buried window | F3 or 3-finger swipe up | All windows visible at once |
| Declutter instantly | Drag windows into separate Spaces | One project per desktop |
| Focus on one app | Option-click another app's Dock icon | Everything else hides |
Pro Moves for the Power User
Turn on System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Mission Control → Group windows by application to stack each app's windows into neat piles. Add a Hot Corner (same settings page) that triggers Mission Control when you fling the cursor to a corner — zero keys required.
