Call of Duty: Warzone Beginner Guide: 9 Tips to Win

Most Warzone matches are decided before the first bullet flies. The Gulag, the buy stations, the shrinking circle — these systems kill more players than any meta weapon. Here are 9 habits that turn chaotic lobbies into winnable matches.

How to use this guide

Work through the six sections in order, practice one tip per session, and use the checklist in the final card before every match. Tap the Share button below to send the guide to your squad.

1–2. The Drop Decides Your Match

Where you land sets the tone for the whole lobby. Hot drops like named cities hand you fast loot and instant gunfights — great for warmups, terrible for learning. New players should drop on the edge of the flight path, in smaller towns or compounds, where you can loot two or three buildings uncontested.

  • Tip 1 — Drop on the edge: pick a landing spot near the flight path's edge so fewer squads contest your loot.
  • Tip 2 — Land with your squad: stay within 50 meters of your teammates. Warzone punishes lone wolves harder than almost any battle royale.

Drop strategy is a whole discipline in itself — our Apex Legends beginner guide breaks down landing decisions that carry straight over to Warzone.

3–4. Armor Plates Are the Real Health Bar

In Warzone, your health bar is a lie and your armor plates are the truth. A full three-plate setup effectively doubles your survivability, and good players re-plate mid-fight behind cover instead of pushing while cracked.

  • Tip 3 — Stay plated up: keep three plates on at all times. Grab an Armor Box from buy stations so the whole squad can refill.
  • Tip 4 — Plate mid-fight: when your plates crack, break line of sight and plate immediately. One plate is the difference between winning and spectating.

5. Buy Stations: Your Cash Is a Second Life

Cash scattered across the map is only useful if you spend it. The single biggest beginner mistake is dying with $10,000 unspent. Spend early, spend smart, and always prioritize staying alive over saving up.

Buy What it does When to grab it
UAV Reveals every enemy on the minimap for your squad Before every rotation or final-circle push
Self-Revive Kit Lets you revive yourself when downed Always — carry one every match
Loadout Drop Gives you your custom-built weapons As soon as the squad can afford it
Precision Airstrike Calls in a devastating strike on a marked area Late game, against entrenched enemies

Once your custom weapons are in hand, the gunplay fundamentals in our Black Ops 6 field manual will sharpen your aim and movement for the fights ahead.

6. Contracts Fund Your Comeback

Contracts are Warzone's secret economy. Each one pays cash, loot, and map information — chain two or three in the early game and your squad buys its loadout while everyone else is still looting pistols.

  • Bounty: hunts a target player — pays well, but reveals your general location.
  • Scavenger: opens supply boxes — the safest contract, perfect for gearing up quietly.
  • Recon / Signal Intel: capture an objective to reveal the next circle — priceless for rotations.
  • Most Wanted: marks YOU on the map for everyone — survive the timer and the payout is massive.

Tip 6 — Chain contracts early: finish at least two contracts before your first buy-station visit. Cash flow wins matches.

7. Win the Gulag, Every Time

Die early and you get one shot at redemption: the Gulag, a cramped 1v1 arena where the winner redeploys. Most players treat it like a coin flip. It is not.

  • Listen for footsteps before you move — sound tells you where they are.
  • Pre-aim the likely angles and use your tactical equipment (stuns and flashes are there for a reason).
  • Do not panic-sprint. Slow, deliberate movement wins more Gulags than rushing.

Tip 7 — Treat it like a clutch round: the 1v1 clutch mindset from our Valorant beginner guide works word-for-word in the Gulag — calm aim beats fast panic.

8–9. Rotate Early, Win Late

The gas is the real final boss. Every circle collapse does more damage than the last, and teams caught rotating late get picked apart by squads already set up. The fix is boring and it works: move before you have to.

  • Tip 8 — Rotate at the halfway mark: when the circle timer hits half, start moving toward the next safe zone — ideally toward high ground or a building with cover on multiple sides.
  • Tip 9 — UAV before you move: pop a UAV, read the dots, then rotate. Walking blind into a set-up squad is how top-10 finishes become top-40.

Positioning discipline decides shooters of every kind — our BF6 elite guide digs deeper into map control if you want the advanced version.

Your Pre-Match Checklist

  • Drop on the flight-path edge with your squad — no lone-wolf landings.
  • Three plates on, spares in the bag, Armor Box for the team.
  • Spend cash early: UAV, Self-Revive, then Loadout Drop.
  • Chain two contracts before your first buy-station trip.
  • Gulag: headphones on, pre-aim angles, use your tactical.
  • Rotate at the halfway mark, UAV up before every move.
