AOP3D's Ultimate Helldivers 2 Beginner Guide: Spreading Managed Democracy Without Getting Yourself Killed
Welcome to the Galactic War, cadet! Helldivers 2 drops you onto hostile planets with one mission: complete the objective and extract alive. Your own bullets hurt your teammates, everything wants to eat you, and reinforcements are limited. This guide covers the loadouts, rules, and mission flow that turn a fresh recruit into a reliable diver.
1. Your Loadout: Weapons, Armor & Stratagems
Before every drop you pick a primary, a secondary, a grenade, armor, and up to four stratagems. Stratagems are your real power — orbital strikes, airstrikes, support weapons, backpacks, and sentries called in with a quick arrow-code input (WASD on keyboard). Learn the six families and when to reach for each:
| Stratagem family | What it does | Beginner pick |
|---|---|---|
| Orbital | Fired from your ship; long cooldown, huge boom | Orbital Precision Strike — pinpoints one problem |
| Eagle | Airstrikes; short cooldown but limited uses, then rearm | Eagle Cluster Bomb — clears bug swarms fast |
| Support weapon | Heavy gun dropped in a pod for you to carry | MG-43 Machine Gun — simple, forgiving, effective |
| Backpack | Passive gear: shields, ammo, jump packs | Shield Generator Pack — eats mistakes for you |
| Sentry | Auto-turret you deploy and reposition with | Gatling Sentry — holds a lane while you work |
| Emplacement / Exosuit | Mechs and heavy gear for late-game chaos | Patriot Exosuit — a walking tank for tough drops |
Buy new stratagems with Requisition Slips earned from missions. For armor, pick passives that match your style: Extra Padding survives hits, Engineering Kit boosts grenades and turrets, Scout helps you stay quiet. Boosters (picked per mission) are small team-wide perks — grab Stamina Enhancement early.
2. The Golden Rules: Friendly Fire, Diving & Staying Alive
- Friendly fire is ALWAYS on. Your bullets, grenades, and airstrikes hurt teammates just as much as bugs. Watch your firing lanes, announce stratagems ("dropping 500kg!"), and never run into someone's line of fire.
- Dive early, dive often. Hitting dive (prone) mid-sprint dodges chargers, explosions, and bile. When something big charges you, dive sideways, not backward.
- Stim like it matters — because it does. Stims heal over time and you can sprint while using one. Pop one before a fight you can't dodge, not after you're already bleeding out.
- Reinforcements are a shared pool. Dying costs the whole team. Ping enemies, mark the map, and revive buddies the moment it's safe — a full team finishes objectives twice as fast.
- You don't have to fight everything. Patrols scale with noise. Sneaking past a patrol to finish the objective quietly is often smarter than a 10-minute firefight.
3. Missions, Samples & Extraction
Every mission has one or more main objectives — launching an ICBM, closing bug holes with grenades or hellbombs, destroying Automaton fabricators, wiping nests and outposts. Finish them, then head to extraction: call the shuttle, survive the countdown, and get aboard. Side objectives are optional but pay medals and XP — worth a detour on lower difficulties.
Samples are the real prize. Common, rare, and super samples fund ship modules that buff your whole arsenal. They drop from glowing plants, rocks, and downed enemies — and they fall out of your corpse when you die, so always pick yours back up. Super credits (found scattered in the world) unlock premium Warbonds; spend medals there on new weapons and armor sets.
Start on difficulty 1–3 (Trivial through Medium) to learn enemy behavior, then climb. Each of the 10 difficulties adds nastier enemies and better loot — but never jump more than one level up until your loadout can handle it. And call in supply drops liberally: running out of stims and ammo mid-fight is the most preventable death in the game.
4. Your First Ten Drops: The Checklist
- Unlock the Orbital Precision Strike and Eagle Cluster Bomb first — they solve the most problems.
- Wear armor with Extra Padding or Engineering Kit until you know your playstyle.
- Memorize two stratagem codes by muscle memory; fumbling codes mid-fight gets you killed.
- Close bug holes and fabricators with grenades from range — don't walk up to them.
- Stim before you're critical, and sprint while stimming.
- Grab every sample you see and always recover your dropped samples.
- Call extraction the moment the main objective is done — greed kills divers.
- Stay with your team. Lone wolves become lone corpses.
