But today, we are stepping outside the digital matrix to debunk one of the oldest visual glitches in the real world: The End of the Rainbow.
We've all seen them dipping into the ocean or hiding behind a line of trees, just begging us to chase down a leprechaun's gold. But here is the ultimate spoiler: rainbows do not have a physical end. Here is the breakdown of why your eyes have been deceiving you since childhood!
1. It’s Not an Arc, It’s a Full Circle
When you look at a rainbow, you aren't looking at a physical, painted arch in the sky. A rainbow is formed when sunlight hits water droplets, refracting and reflecting light back to your eyes.
Because light bounces inside spherical drops, it exits at exactly 42 degrees. Traced completely around your field of vision, it forms a perfect 360-degree circle.
2. The Horizon is the Ultimate "Ad Blocker"
So why do we only see a half-circle? It all comes down to the ground. When standing on a beach or looking out a window, the Earth's surface physically gets in the way of the bottom half.
The horizon acts like a massive wall blocking the projection, making it look like the rainbow "ends" where it hits the ground.
3. It's A Personal Hologram
Here is the wildest part: a rainbow isn't a physical object with GPS coordinates. It is entirely an optical illusion created by your specific vantage point.
If you and a friend stand 100 feet apart, you are actually seeing two completely different rainbows constructed by entirely different sets of water droplets!
