Welcome back! Today, we're tackling the biggest mystery of them all: Are we alone in the universe?
Spoiler alert: Probably not.
The Cosmic Spoon
"Not believing in aliens is like taking a spoon of water from the ocean and saying there're no whales in the ocean because they're none in my spoon."
This isn't just top-tier humor; it perfectly summarizes the stance of modern astrophysics. As Neil deGrasse Tyson has pointed out, looking at our tiny corner of space and deciding we are the only living things in existence is like scooping up a cup of water at the beach and declaring the ocean void of whales.
We have barely dipped our toes into the cosmic ocean.
The Math: Why They Should Exist
To understand why scientists are so confident we aren't alone, you just have to look at the numbers. The observable universe is incomprehensibly massive. It contains an estimated 2 trillion galaxies, and each of those galaxies contains hundreds of billions of stars.
Even thousands of years ago, people realized how silly it is to think we are uniquely special. In the 3rd century B.C., a philosopher named Metrodorus argued that considering Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as asserting that in an entire field sown with millet, only one single grain will grow.
The Drake Equation
Fast forward to 1961, and astrophysicist Dr. Frank Drake decided to put some math behind this philosophy. He created the Drake Equation, a probabilistic argument used to estimate the number of active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy.
The equation looks like this:
- $R^*$ = The average rate of star formation in our galaxy.
- $f_p$ = The fraction of those stars that have planets.
- $n_e$ = The average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets.
- $f_l$ = The fraction of planets that could support life that actually develop life at some point.
- $f_i$ = The fraction of planets with life that go on to develop intelligent life.
- $f_c$ = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.
- $L$ = The length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space.
Even if you plug in extremely conservative numbers for these variables, the result still suggests there should be thousands, if not millions, of civilizations out there. Thanks to telescopes like Kepler, we now know that planets ($f_p$) are incredibly common.
The Elephant in the Room: The Fermi Paradox
So, the math says the universe should be teeming with life. This brings us to the ultimate cosmic buzzkill: The Fermi Paradox.
Named after the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Enrico Fermi, this paradox highlights a glaring, terrifying contradiction. If there is a high probability of extraterrestrial civilizations existing, where is everybody?
Why haven't we detected any radio signals? Why haven't we found any alien megastructures? Are they hiding? Are we quarantined? Did they look at our internet search history and decide to lock the cosmic doors?
Solving the Paradox
Scientists and philosophers have proposed a few solutions to this unsettling silence:

The sheer scale of space makes it highly improbable that Earth is the sole host to intelligence. To claim otherwise is nothing short of human arrogance. The silence of the Fermi Paradox is deafening, but it doesn't mean the ocean is empty—it just means we haven't figured out how to listen to the whales yet.
We don't need to empty the ocean. We just need a bigger spoon.
