How to Choose a Computer Tech You Can Trust
How to Choose a Computer Tech You Can Trust
Handing someone your computer means handing them your photos, your email, your banking, your whole digital life. Choose the wrong tech and you pay twice: once for the “fix,” and again to undo it. This short guide — written by a tech who answers for his work in a small town where reputation is everything — will help you choose well, whoever you end up calling.
The hourly trap
Many shops bill by the hour. Do the math on an example: at $95 an hour, a three-hour virus cleanup costs $285 — plus a “diagnostic fee” — and you only learn the total when the meter stops. A flat quote works the opposite way: you approve one price before anyone touches your machine, and that price does not grow while you wait. Ask which model a shop uses before you ask anything else.
7 questions to ask any tech before you hand over your machine
- Flat quote or hourly? If the answer is hourly, you are handing over a blank check.
- Will you tell me if it is not worth fixing? An honest tech sometimes sells you nothing — and earns a customer for life.
- Who actually does the work? The person you are talking to, a depot three states away, or a call-center script?
- Can I watch? Remote work should happen with your permission, on your screen, while you watch.
- What happens to my data and passwords? You should never have to write your passwords down for anyone.
- How do I reach you afterwards? Phone tag and hold music, or a text that a real person answers?
- What do your Google reviews say — and how many are there? Five reviews is a hobby. A hundred or more, recent and answered, is a track record.
Red flags: walk away
- Anyone who contacts you first claiming your computer is infected, and wants gift cards or instant remote access — that is not a tech, that is a scammer. Hang up.
- No price until the work is done.
- Pressure to decide right now.
- Almost no reviews, or reviews the business never answers.

Questions smart shoppers ask us
How much does it cost?
Every job gets a flat quote up front, before any work begins — you approve the price first. A remote diagnostic is a flat $80, we never bill by the hour, and there are no surprise add-ons. If a fix is not worth doing, we will tell you that honestly instead.
I am not a “computer person.” Will you still help me?
Absolutely — that is our specialty. We explain everything in plain language, never talk down to you, and go at your pace. Text us the problem in your own words and we will handle the rest.
Do you ever tell people not to repair something?
Yes, and it is some of the best work we do. When a machine is too old or a repair costs more than the computer is worth, we will tell you straight and help you move your files to something better instead.
Can you help without me leaving home?
Usually, yes. Most work happens over a secure remote session: you text us, we connect with your permission, and you watch while we work — your computer never leaves your desk. If it turns out to be a hardware problem, just drop it off at our Rockport shop.
What is Unlimited Remote Tech Support?
It is our membership for people who want the Wizard on call: $60/month per device covers unlimited remote tech support for that device, with priority help 9 AM–7 PM, 7 days a week. One subscription covers one device; each additional device is $60/month more.
