Chapter 1: The legend in the Thorns
Daylight usually brings safety to Oakhaven, but this morning, the sun felt more like a harsh fluorescent light over a crime scene.
Marcus stood at the edge of Elm Avenue, his stomach twisting into tight, nauseating knots. Beside him, Chloe was weeping silently, her hands covering her mouth.
The air here didn't smell like pine needles and morning dew. It smelled heavily of old copper, hot stomach acid, and rotting meat.
Voicemail Transcript - Toby's Phone - 11:43 PM
(Heavy, ragged breathing. The sound of running feet slapping against concrete.)
Toby: "Oh god... oh god, please. It’s matching my steps. It’s right beside me in the—"
(A sound like thick, wet branches snapping, followed by a wet tearing noise.)
Toby: (A high-pitched, gargling scream that cuts off abruptly.)
(Silence for ten seconds. Then, a low, guttural exhalation that rattles the phone’s microphone. The sound of heavy foliage dragging across concrete. End of message.)
"Don't look at it, Chloe," Marcus whispered, though he couldn't tear his own eyes away.
The ancient hedge bordering the Miller estate wasn't just parted; it was violently ruptured. The thick, thorny branches had been bent backward, woven together like the ribs of a flayed ribcage. The gaping tunnel led straight into the black heart of the foliage, so dense that no sunlight penetrated it.
Scattered across the concrete sidewalk were the remnants of Toby's last moments.
The Grim Discoveries
- The Phone: Smashed face-down into the pavement. Embedded in the cracked glass was one of Toby’s fingernails, torn out by the root in his desperate attempt to claw his way away from the tree line.
- The Backpack: It wasn’t just dropped; it was impaled. A thick, jagged branch had pierced straight through the heavy canvas, suspending it three feet in the air.
- The Blood: It wasn't a puddle. It was a wide, slick smear dragging directly from the street light, over the curb, and into the dark maw of the bushes.
"We have to go to the police," Chloe choked out, taking a step backward. Her eyes were darting frantically, looking at the tops of the hedges.
"The police won't go in there," Marcus said, his voice hollow. "You read the AOP3D forum posts. You know what lives in there. The Bushman."
"It's just an urban legend!" Chloe cried, her voice cracking.
"Does this look like a legend?" Marcus snapped, gesturing to the blood-soaked leaves.
He took a hesitant step closer to the opening in the hedge, peering into the suffocating darkness. The smell of decay was overwhelming. As his eyes adjusted, he saw something caught on a thorn, deep inside the tunnel. A piece of Toby’s torn, bloody flannel shirt.
But it was what was behind the shirt that made Marcus’s blood run cold.
Deep within the pitch-black shadows of the hedge, the foliage shifted. There was no wind, but the leaves began to tremble violently. Slowly, a pair of pale, hollow, unblinking eyes opened in the darkness, suspended eight feet off the ground.
It was looking right at him.
A heavy drop of fresh blood fell from the canopy above, landing on Marcus’s cheek with a warm splat.
Crunch.
A massive, unseen foot stepped forward inside the brush. The creature wasn't sleeping. It was waiting for them to realize it was there.
"Run," Marcus breathed. When Chloe didn't move, frozen in pure terror, he grabbed her arm and screamed, "RUN!"
