7 Windows 11 File Explorer Tricks That Save Hours Every Week

You probably open File Explorer a dozen times a day and still click around like it's 2007. Windows 11 quietly packed it with browser-style tabs, instant previews, and keyboard shortcuts that turn file chores into seconds. Here are the seven that matter most.

1. Browse in Tabs, Not in Window Clutter

Since the Windows 11 22H2 update, File Explorer works like your browser: press Ctrl + T to open a new tab, Ctrl + W to close it, and Ctrl + Tab to hop between tabs. Or just click the + at the top of the window. Stop opening a new Explorer window for every folder — one window with tabs is faster and easier on your taskbar.

2. Preview Any File Without Opening It

Click any file once, then press Alt + P. A preview pane slides in on the right showing images, PDFs, text documents, and more — no app launches, no waiting. Press Alt + P again to hide it. When you're hunting for "that one document" among dozens, this trick alone pays for itself every single day.

3. Pin Your Power Folders to Quick Access

Right-click any folder — your work projects, downloads staging area, photo dumps — and choose Pin to Quick access. It parks at the top of the navigation pane so you never dig through folder trees again. Right-click a pin to remove it when the project is done. Your five most-used folders should always live here.

4. The Five-Shortcut Starter Pack

Memorize these five and you'll cut your mouse mileage in half:

  • Win + E — open File Explorer from anywhere
  • Alt + D (or Ctrl + L) — jump straight to the address bar to type or paste a path
  • Ctrl + Shift + N — create a new folder instantly
  • F2 — rename the selected file or folder
  • Alt + ↑ — jump up to the parent folder

5. Make the Address Bar and Search Box Do the Work

That bar at the top isn't just decoration. Click any crumb in the breadcrumb trail to jump to that level, or type a full path to teleport. And the search box in the top-right accepts filters: type kind:pdf to find only PDFs, datemodified:this week for recent edits, or *.png for every image. Then click Save search on the ribbon to keep it as a virtual folder that updates itself.

6. Drag an Item to the Address Bar to Move It Up

Need to drop a file into the parent folder? Don't cut and paste. Just drag the file onto any breadcrumb in the address bar — the crumb highlights, release, done. It also works with tabs: drag a file from the file list onto a different tab to move it there. Far less fiddly than juggling two windows.

7. Change What File Explorer Opens To

Win+E always landing on Home when you live in This PC? Click the three-dot menu → Options → the General tab, and change "Open File Explorer to" to This PC or your own folder. One fewer click on every single Explorer session adds up fast.
