7 macOS Tips: Finder Tricks You Will Love
Your Mac's Finder hides genuine time-savers in plain sight. These seven macOS tips take minutes to learn and pay you back in saved clicks every single day.
Tips 1–3: See More, Click Less
- Quick Look everything: select any file and tap Space for an instant preview — even videos and PDFs.
- Show the Path Bar: View → Show Path Bar reveals exactly where a file lives; double-click any step to jump there.
- Preview panel: View → Show Preview adds a side panel with file details and quick actions like Rotate and Markup.
These three alone end most 'where did I save that?' hunts — the same spirit as our find lost Windows files guide, on the Mac side of the fence.
Tips 4–5: Tame the Desktop and Folders
- Stacks: right-click the desktop and choose Use Stacks — clutter files itself into tidy piles by kind.
- Tags: color-tag active projects (red means 'this week'), then find them all from the Finder sidebar in one click.
| Tag color | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Red | Urgent this week |
| Yellow | Waiting on someone |
| Green | Done — archive soon |
Tips 6–7: Move at Keyboard Speed
- Go to Folder: Command+Shift+G, then type a path — instant teleport for deep folders.
- Copy a pathname: right-click a file while holding Option to reveal 'Copy as Pathname' for sharing exact locations.
Pair these with strong habits from our safer logins guide and your Mac becomes both faster and safer in the same afternoon.
Make the Tricks Stick
Pick two tricks, not seven. Use them deliberately for a week until they become reflexes, then add the next pair. Finder mastery is a staircase, not a download — and every step is free, built in, and waiting in the View menu you already have.
The 7, on One List
- Space for Quick Look.
- Path Bar on.
- Preview panel on.
- Stacks for the desktop.
- Tags for projects.
- Command+Shift+G to jump.
- Option-click to copy pathnames.
Which Finder trick would save you the most clicks every day?
