7 Hidden Android Shortcuts That Save You 10 Minutes a Day

Your Android phone has a second control layer most people never touch. Seven gestures and tricks, built right into the system, that shave seconds off things you do dozens of times daily.

1Double-tap the back button area to switch apps

Swipe right on the bottom navigation bar (the gesture pill) to jump instantly to your last-used app. Swipe again to hop back. It's the fastest context switch on any phone — faster than opening the recent-apps carousel, and it works everywhere.

2Long-press an app icon for instant actions

Nearly every app hides shortcuts in its launcher icon: long-press Chrome to open a new incognito tab, long-press the phone icon to call favorites, long-press Camera to jump straight to selfie mode. Even better — drag one of these shortcuts onto your home screen and it becomes its own one-tap button.

3Swipe down on the fingerprint sensor for notifications

On phones with a rear fingerprint sensor (Pixels and many others), swipe down across it to pull down the notification shade — no more finger gymnastics to reach the top of a tall screen. Enable it under Settings → System → Gestures if it's not already on.

4Pin the apps you actually open to the top of the share menu

Tired of scrolling through the share sheet every time you send a link? Long-press any app in the share menu and tap Pin — it locks to the top of the row. Pin your messaging app, your email, and your "save for later" app once, and sharing becomes a two-tap motion forever.

5Undo a dismiss with the trash-can undo

Swiped away a notification you needed? On most recent Android versions, the notification history has your back: go to Settings → Notifications → Notification history and turn it on. Every dismissed notification is logged for 24 hours — nothing important ever vanishes again.

6Double-press power for the camera — from a locked screen

Double-press the power button and the camera launches instantly, even with the screen off. It's in Settings → System → Gestures → Quickly open camera. That fleeting moment your kid or dog does something hilarious? This is the difference between capturing it and telling the story about the one that got away.

7Split-screen two apps with one drag

Open your first app, swipe up to the recent-apps view, tap the app's icon at the top of its card, and choose Split screen. Then tap your second app. Maps on top, messages below; a video on top, notes below. To exit, drag the divider all the way to either edge.
