iPhone Screen Time Guide: Set Limits That Stick

Screen Time fails when it is a punishment. Set it up as a calm schedule — Downtime for sleep, app limits for scroll traps — and your iPhone starts working for your attention instead of against it.

Step 1: Turn It On and Set a Passcode

Open Settings → Screen Time, tap Turn On, and set a Screen Time passcode that is different from your phone passcode. That one detail is why most limits get bypassed in a day — especially on a family device.

Step 2: Schedule Downtime

  • Set Downtime to start an hour before bed and end at your wake time.
  • Allow only Phone, Messages, and the apps you truly need overnight.
  • Turn on Block at Downtime so the schedule has teeth.

Sleep is where Downtime pays for itself in the first week.

Step 3: App Limits That Target the Trap, Not Everything

Limit categories, not joy: social and video apps get a daily budget, while reading, music, and maps stay free. Start generous — a limit you keep beats a strict one you delete by Thursday. Review the weekly Screen Time report and tighten one app at a time.

Step 4: Family Controls Without the Fight

For a child's device, set limits from your own phone under Family, agree the numbers together first, and let Communication Limits keep calls and messages open to known contacts. Rules explained calmly at the table survive longer than rules discovered at bedtime.

The 7-Day Check

After a week, open the report and look at pickups and first-app-after-waking. Those two numbers tell the truth about your habits. Which app would your report say owns your first ten minutes?
