iPhone Focus Filters: Silence Apps by Schedule
Your iPhone already knows how to leave you alone — by schedule, by place, by app. Focus filters are the setting that turns willpower into automation.
Start With Three Modes Only
Open Settings, then Focus. Keep it simple: Work, Sleep, and Personal. Three well-tuned modes beat nine abandoned ones. For each mode, choose who can reach you, which apps can notify you, and when the mode turns itself on. Automation is the whole point — if you must remember to enable it, it will fail on your busiest day.
- Work: colleagues and calendar, weekdays only
- Sleep: family favorites only, every night
- Personal: friends and hobbies, evenings and weekends
Focus Filters: The Hidden Superpower
Inside each Focus, scroll to Focus Filters. Here you can make Mail show only a work inbox, make Messages hide certain conversations, and make Safari open a specific tab group. This is deeper than silencing notifications — the apps themselves change personality with the mode.
Start with one filter per mode. Live with it for a week, then add the next. Small, trusted automation sticks.
Let Schedules Do the Work
Attach times and locations: Work mode at the office from nine to five, Sleep mode at bedtime, Personal mode when you arrive home. Then test each transition once while watching the phone. A mode that fires reliably becomes invisible infrastructure for your attention.
| Option | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Time schedule | Predictable routines | Adjust for holidays |
| Location schedule | Office or home based | Needs location access |
| App trigger | Opening a work app | Easy to forget to exit |
Fix the Two Common Complaints
If important people cannot reach you, add them as allowed contacts and enable Time Sensitive notifications for messages and reminders. If a mode will not turn off, check every automation attached to it — a forgotten location trigger is the usual culprit. Focus is a system; tune it like one, calmly, once.
