How to Switch from iPhone to Android Without Losing Your Texts
Making the leap from Apple to Android? The biggest worry most people have is what will happen to their messages.
The good news is that your old texts are safe! However, to make sure your new texts actually reach you, there is one crucial step you absolutely cannot skip. Here is your simple, step-by-step guide to making the switch smoothly.
Step 1: Turn Off iMessage (Do this FIRST!)
This is the most important step. If you take your SIM card out of your iPhone without doing this, Apple’s servers will still think your number is an iPhone. Any text an iPhone user sends you will get lost in a digital void, and your new Android won't receive it.
While your SIM card is still in your old iPhone, do this:
-
Open your iPhone Settings.
-
Scroll down and tap on Messages.
-
Toggle the iMessage switch to the Off position.
-
Go back to Settings, tap on FaceTime, and turn that Off as well.
Forgot to do this and already sold your iPhone? Don't panic! You can go to Apple’s "Deregister iMessage" website on any computer and enter your phone number to disconnect it remotely.
Step 2: Transfer Your Old Messages to Android
Your entire message history is still safely tied to your Apple ID (and will stay on your Mac or iPad). But you can also bring a copy of those messages right onto your new phone.
-
Turn on your new Android phone for the first time.
-
Follow the on-screen setup instructions.
-
When prompted to Copy apps & data, choose to bring your data from an iPhone.
-
Connect your iPhone and your new Android together using a cable.
-
Select Messages from the list of things to transfer. The built-in transfer app will automatically copy your old iMessages and convert them into standard text messages on your new device.
Step 3: Understand the "Blue to Green" Change
Once you are fully set up on your new Android, here is what you can expect going forward:
-
Green Bubbles: You will no longer have iMessage on your phone. Group chats and texts between you and your iPhone friends will now send as standard text messages (SMS/MMS/RCS).
-
Macs and iPads: If you still own an iPad or a Mac, you can actually keep using iMessage on those devices! Instead of your phone number, your iMessages will just be sent and received using your Apple ID email address.
