Tesla Sentry Mode: 5 Tricks to Catch Everything
Your parked Tesla is already watching — if Sentry Mode is set up right. Most owners miss the USB, viewing, and battery tricks that decide whether a clip is actually there when you need it.
What Sentry Mode Actually Does
Sentry Mode keeps your Tesla's cameras alert while parked. If someone leans on the car, pulls a handle, or gets too close, the car wakes, shows a recording notice on screen, and saves the surrounding minutes.
It uses the same camera suite explained in Tesla FSD Cameras: What Your Car Actually Sees. Sentry is a parked-car guard, not driving help — Autopilot and FSD remain driver-supervised when you are on the road.
Sentry Mode vs Dashcam: Know the Difference
Owners mix these up constantly. They share cameras and the same USB drive, but they work at different times:
| Feature | When It Works | What It Saves |
|---|---|---|
| Sentry Mode | Parked and locked | Clips when motion or a threat is detected nearby |
| Dashcam | While driving | Rolling footage; tap the icon or honk (if set) to save |
| Live Camera | Parked, via the app | A live view around the car when Sentry is on |
Turn both on: Controls > Safety > Sentry Mode, and Dashcam set to Auto or On Honk.
Trick 1 & 2: Fix the USB Drive First
- Use a roomy, durable drive: a high-endurance USB or SSD made for constant writing lasts far longer than a cheap stick.
- Format it in the car: Controls > Safety > Format USB Drive creates the TeslaCam folder for you.
- Check it monthly: a full or failed drive means no clips — the car cannot save to nowhere.
Pair this with the habits in Tesla Battery Health: 5 Charging Habits That Preserve Range so Sentry's small parked drain never surprises you.
Trick 3 & 4: Actually Find and Keep Your Clips
Tap the Dashcam icon while parked to open the viewer and scrub Sentry clips by time and camera angle. Found gold? Long-press or use the app prompts to keep it before older footage is overwritten.
- Review clips the same day — busy lots create lots of events.
- Copy important clips to your phone or computer; do not rely on the drive forever.
- Use Live Camera in the Tesla app sparingly to check the car without walking out.

Trick 5: Stop the Battery Drain at Home
Sentry stays awake, so it uses more energy parked than a sleeping car. In Safety settings, exclude Home, Work, or Favorite places where you do not need it — your garage does not need a guard dog.
On trips, leave it on in unfamiliar lots, and plan charging like in Tesla Winter Driving: 7 Tricks to Keep Your Range: cold weather plus Sentry plus a low charge is a bad trio.
The Bottom Line
- Turn Sentry and Dashcam on, and format a good drive in-car.
- Check clips early, copy the keepers, and check the drive monthly.
- Exclude Home and Work to save battery where you are already safe.
