First, a quick note: A force restart is different from a standard shutdown. It's a hardware-level command used when your iPhone is frozen, unresponsive, or won't turn on. This process will not erase any data on your device.

Find your iPhone model group below and follow the simple steps.

Method 1: For Newer iPhones (with Face ID or a solid-state Home button)

This method applies to:

• iPhone 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, X, XS, XR series

• iPhone 8 series

• iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)

If your iPhone does not have a physical, clickable Home button on the front, this is your method.

The sequence is: Press, Press, Press-and-Hold.

1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.

2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.

3. Press and hold the Side button (on the right side of the phone).

Keep holding the Side button, even when the "slide to power off" screen appears. Wait until you see the Apple logo (), then you can release the button. Your iPhone will then finish restarting.

Method 2: For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

This model is unique because it has a non-mechanical Home button.

1. Press and hold both the Volume Down button and the Sleep/Wake button (on the right side) at the same time.

2. Continue holding both buttons until the screen turns off and the Apple logo () appears. Release both buttons once you see the logo.

Method 3: For Older iPhones (with a physical, clickable Home button)

This method applies to:

• iPhone 6s, 6, and earlier models

• iPhone SE (1st generation)

• iPod touch (6th generation and earlier)

If your iPhone has a round Home button that you can physically press and feel "click," this is your method.

1. Press and hold both the Home button (the round button on the front) and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.

   • On iPhone 6 and later, the Sleep/Wake button is on the side.

   • On iPhone 5s and earlier, the Sleep/Wake button is on the top.

2. Keep holding both buttons until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo () appears. Once you see the logo, you can let go.
