Locked Out of Your Mac?
Forgetting your password is frustrating, but Apple provides several secure ways to regain access. Follow our step-by-step guide for Intel and M-Series (M1, M2, M3) Macs.
Method 1: Using Your Apple ID
The easiest method if you have linked your Apple ID to your user account.
1 Restart your Mac and wait for the login screen.
2 Enter any password three times.
3 Click the message: “Reset it using your Apple ID.”
4 Enter your Apple ID credentials and follow the prompts to create a new password.
Method 2: macOS Recovery
If Apple ID reset isn't enabled, use the hardware-specific boot methods below:
M-Series (M1, M2, M3)
- Shut down Mac.
- Hold Power until "Loading startup options" appears.
- Click Options > Continue.
Intel Macs
- Restart Mac.
- Immediately hold Cmd (⌘) + R.
- Release when you see the Apple logo.
Once in Recovery, go to Utilities > Terminal and type:
resetpassword
Press Enter and follow the UI prompts to set your new credentials.
Method 3: Erase & Reinstall
⚠️ Warning: This will delete all data on your Mac. Only use this if you have a backup or no other choice.
1 Boot into Recovery Mode (see previous tab).
2 Select Disk Utility and click Continue.
3 Select "Macintosh HD" and click Erase.
4 Close Disk Utility and select Reinstall macOS.
💡 Pro Tips for the Future
Use a Manager: Store your Mac password in a secure password manager.
Spare Admin: Create a second admin account for emergency access.
