How2 Android: Master Split-Screen Multitasking in 60 Seconds
Two apps, one screen, zero excuses. Here's how to run split-screen on any modern Android phone — and actually get more done with it.
🚀 Launch It in Seconds
Split-screen has been baked into Android for years. The fastest way in:
- Open your first app, then swipe up and hold (or tap the Recents button) to open the recent-apps view.
- Tap the app's icon at the top of its preview card and choose "Split screen."
- Pick your second app — from recents or the app drawer. Done. Two apps, one screen.
On Samsung phones you can also swipe with two fingers from the bottom of the screen in some setups — check Settings → Advanced features → Multi window if you want the gesture version.
🔧 Resize, Swap, Escape
- Resize: drag the divider bar between the two apps up or down to give one more room.
- Swap: on many phones, double-tapping the divider flips which app is on top.
- Escape: drag the divider all the way to the top or bottom edge to close one app and go full-screen with the other.
- Heads-up: a few apps (some banking and streaming apps) refuse split-screen by design. That's the app's choice, not a bug in your phone.
💡 Combos That Actually Work
- Maps + music: navigation on top, playback controls below. Road-trip mode.
- Browser + notes: research on one side, your notes on the other. Homework speedrun.
- Video call + calendar: reference your schedule without leaving the call.
- YouTube + messaging: watch and chat without constant app-switching.
