The House Always Counts: What "Free Step Counter" Apps Are Really Doing With Your Movement Data
It counts your steps for free, out of the goodness of its heart. Or — and stay with the Wizard here — it counts your steps because every step you take is data, and data is the actual product.
The Trade You Didn't Read
A pedometer needs one permission: motion sensors. So why do so many 'free' step counter apps ask for your location, your contacts, your advertising ID, and the right to run in the background forever?
Because your step data is not the product. You are the product, and your step data is just the bait.
What They Actually Harvest
- Location trails: step counts tied to GPS reveal where you walk, where you live, where you work, and the route between them.
- Routine fingerprints: when you wake, when you commute, when you sleep — a behavioral profile that advertisers and data brokers will pay for.
- Advertising IDs and device fingerprints: used to stitch your walking habits to your browsing, shopping, and app usage.
- Health inference: sedentary weeks, late-night activity, declining mobility — signals about your health that you never consented to share for that purpose.
The Telltale Signs of a Data-Harvesting Pedometer
Spot the house edge before you install:
- Asks for location 'always' when 'while using' would do — or at all, for a step counter.
- Requires an account to count steps. A pedometer is math, not a social network.
- No paid tier and no visible business model. If there's no way to pay them, someone else is.
- Vague privacy policy that mentions 'analytics partners,' 'marketing partners,' or 'affiliates.'
How2 Count Steps Without Being Counted
Use your phone's built-in health app — both iOS and Android count steps natively with no ad network attached. If you want a dedicated app, pick one that works offline, asks for no account, and lists a clear paid version. Your steps are yours. Don't let a free app sell the story your feet are telling.
