AOP3D's Ultimate Terraria Beginner Guide: Surviving Your First Blood Moon and Digging to the Underworld

Terraria drops you into a gorgeous, deadly 2D sandbox with a copper shortsword and zero instructions. This guide walks your first days — shelter before sunset, your first metal armor, the boss order that unlocks the Dungeon and the Underworld — so your first Blood Moon is a triumph, not a funeral.

🌳 Day One: Build Before Sunset

Your first day is a race against the sun. Underground enemies are weak, surface enemies at night are not. Follow this priority list from the moment you spawn:

  • Chop trees immediately. Your starting Copper Axe fells trees fast — 100+ wood is the goal. Wood builds your Work Bench (10 wood), walls, and your first house.
  • Craft a Work Bench, then tools. The bench unlocks the full early crafting menu: a wooden Bow, Wooden Arrows, and Torches (wood + gel from slimes — kill every slime you see).
  • Build a box house. Four walls of wood, a background wall covering every tile, a Work Bench, a Table, a Chair, a Torch, and a Door. That exact combination counts as valid NPC housing — the Guide moves in and more NPCs arrive as you hit milestones.
  • Light up everything. Torches placed along your house and down your mine shaft stop enemies from spawning in the dark. Gel is precious early — keep farming slimes.

Sunset rule: be inside a walled, torched base by 7:30 PM game time. Your first night outside is how Terraria teaches you what "hardcore" feels like.

⛏️ The Underground Economy: Ore Tiers

Terraria's progression is a ladder of ores — each tier's pickaxe mines the next tier's ore. Breaking this ladder costs you days of digging with the wrong tool:

Tier Ore (your world's pair) Craft first Unlocks
1 Copper / Tin Copper Pickaxe Surface starter ores
2 Iron / Lead Iron Pickaxe + Anvil Silver/Tungsten, gold tier weapons
3 Silver / Tungsten Silver Pickaxe Gold / Platinum ore
4 Gold / Platinum Full armor + pickaxe Demonite/Crimtane, Dungeon gear

Key fact: each world only gets ONE ore from each pair. Don't waste time hunting for iron in a lead world — mine what your world offers.

🌙 Blood Moon Survival Kit

Blood Moons rise randomly — the sky turns red, zombies spawn in packs, and they can open doors. Your beginner-proof defense plan:

  • Block your doors. Place a block in front of every door, or build your house raised with rope access — zombies can't jump.
  • Fight from a platform. Build a long wooden platform above your base with torches. Zombies can't reach you; your bow, yoyo, or thrown weapons can reach them.
  • Farm the Demon Eye and zombies for loot. Blood Moon zombies drop money like crazy, and the Blood Zombie can drop the Shackle (early accessory). The Drippler drops the Blood Butcherer-class upgrade path materials. Stack money — the Merchant's stock is how you afford the Minishark later.
  • Get 200+ HP first. Smash every Life Crystal you find underground (red hearts in stone). Blood Moon enemies hit hard at 100 HP — at 200 HP with iron armor, you're the hunter, not the prey.

Pro move: craft a Suspicious Looking Eye (6 lenses at a Demon/Crimson Altar) so YOU choose when to fight the Eye of Cthulhu instead of letting the game pick your moment.

👁️ The Pre-Hardmode Boss Order (Don't Skip Steps)

Terraria bosses unlock the map in a fixed order. Fight them in this sequence — each one drops the materials that make the next one fair:

  • 1. Eye of Cthulhu — spawns naturally once you have 200 HP, 10 defense, 3+ NPCs, and one un-fought night. Reward: Demonite/Crimtane ore and the Dryad's arrival. Arena: two long platforms.
  • 2. Eater of Worlds (Corruption) or Brain of Cthulhu (Crimson) — smash 3 Shadow Orbs / Crimson Hearts with bombs (buy from the Demolitionist) or a hammer. Reward: Shadow Scales / Tissue Samples — the best pre-Dungeon armor materials.
  • 3. Skeletron — talk to the Old Man at the Dungeon entrance at night. Reward: full Dungeon access — Shadow Keys, the Muramasa, Cobalt Shield, and the Mechanic NPC.
  • 4. Wall of Flesh — the final pre-Hardmode boss. Build a long bridge across the Underworld, toss a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava, and RUN while it charges you. Reward: Hardmode begins — new ores, new bosses, everything hits harder.

Queen Bee and King Slime are optional side bosses — great early money and accessories, but neither is required to progress.

🔥 Hell Prep: The Obsidian Gauntlet

The Underworld is a lake of lava, bone serpents, and Hellstone — and you need Hellstone gear to fight the Wall of Flesh. Two rules:

  • Water + lava = obsidian. Dump water buckets onto lava pools to make Obsidian, then mine it with a Nightmare/Deathbringer Pickaxe (made from your evil-boss materials). Craft the Obsidian Skull accessory so standing near Hellstone stops burning you.
  • Hellstone needs an Obsidian Pickaxe to mine — then smelt it with Obsidian at a Hellforge (loot one down there) into Hellstone Bars. This is your Wall of Flesh armor and sword set.

Bring a long flat runway of stone or ash blocks across the lava pools — fighting the Wall of Flesh while platforming over lava is how runs end. With Hellstone gear and a bridge, it's a victory lap.

✅ First Week Checklist

  • House with walls, table, chair, torch, and door — Guide moved in
  • Work Bench, Furnace, and Anvil crafted; iron-tier pickaxe in hand
  • 200+ HP from Life Crystals; iron/lead armor equipped
  • Blood Moon defense built (blocked doors + raised platform)
  • Suspicious Looking Eye ready; Eye of Cthulhu defeated on your terms
  • Evil biome boss (Eater/Brain) beaten; Nightmare/Deathbringer pickaxe made
  • Dungeon looted after Skeletron; Obsidian Skull + Hellstone armor forged
  • Underworld bridge built; Guide Voodoo Doll dropped — Hardmode unlocked

Follow this ladder and your first Blood Moon becomes a loot piñata instead of a graveyard. Dig deep, fight smart, and welcome to Hardmode, wizard.
