aop3debunks: Your Phone Is Listening? No

Welcome back to AOP3D Debunks Everything — today we retire the spookiest everyday myth in tech: you mention hiking boots once, an ad for hiking boots appears, and the verdict feels obvious. Your phone must be listening. It is a great story. The evidence says otherwise.

The Breakdown

In 2018, researchers at Northeastern University studied 17,240 popular Android apps looking specifically for secret audio or video recording — and found the apps did not unexpectedly activate the microphone or record audio. (Their genuine warning was different: some apps recorded the screen — a reason to mind app permissions, not a hidden microphone.)

Meta has likewise denied, repeatedly and on the record, using phone microphones to target ads — a practice that would be a legal and reputational catastrophe for the company if ever proven.

The Real Story

So why did the boots ad feel personal? Because profiling does not need your voice. Advertisers work from your searches, location patterns, purchases, the apps you use, and the behaviour of people similar to you — plus the frequency illusion: once boots are on your mind, you notice the boot ads that were always there and forget the hundred irrelevant ones.

Household sharing completes the illusion: a partner searches boots on the shared Wi-Fi, and your feed 'magically' knows. No microphone required — just data exhaust and a very human pattern-spotter.

Outro: Guard the Right Door

The myth points at the wrong door. Your real controls are app permissions: check which apps hold microphone access in your phone's privacy settings and revoke any that have no business there — not because they are secretly recording for ads, but because hygiene beats folklore.

Which tech myth should we debunk next?
