The Base Set Pikachu's red cheeks weren't a printing error — they were an unsanctioned makeover. A nerdy-collector investigation into the most famous cheek-tint in TCG history.

Welcome back to Alakazam's Archives, fellow misprint hunters. Tonight we crack open one of the most argued-about cases in vintage collecting: a little yellow mouse whose cheeks couldn't decide what color to be.

The Mystery in the Cheeks

Base Set Pikachu (#58, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita) exists in two cheek colors: Red Cheeks and Yellow Cheeks. According to Bulbapedia's Pikachu TCG documentation, the original Japanese print sported yellow cheeks — fitting, since the card's artwork shows Pikachu unleashing ThunderShock.

But when Wizards of the Coast printed the first English release, the cheeks came out red. The collector legend says WotC staff assumed Pikachu's cheeks were supposed to be red and recolored the art without the artist's permission. It matched Ken Sugimori's classic red-cheeked Pikachu artwork, so nobody blinked.

Where to Find Them

The Red Cheeks variant appears in the 1st Edition and Shadowless Base Set print runs — plus the elusive E3 promo version, which also carries the crimson cheeks. When the Unlimited run rolled around, WotC quietly switched back to yellow, and red cheeks vanished from the presses. That makes red cheeks the earlier, scarcer face of the franchise mascot.

The Collector's Verdict

Despite often being called the most well-known "misprint" in the hobby, the Red Cheeks Pikachu was almost certainly a deliberate (if unauthorized) recolor — not a true printing error. Still, the market treats it like treasure: Red Cheeks copies typically command roughly double the price of their yellow-cheeked siblings and are considered the rarer, more desirable variant.

Archives rule of thumb: a red-cheeked 1st Edition in crisp shape is the centerpiece of any vintage binder — but always verify the edition and shadowless status first, because a yellow-cheeked Unlimited copy is worth pocket change by comparison.
