How a Base Set Card Crashed the Jungle Party

To understand why a Base Set card has a "Prerelease" stamp, we have to travel back to 1999 during the launch of the Jungle expansion. The intended prerelease promo for the Pokémon League was a Holofoil Clefable.

During manufacturing, the printer used hot foil stamping machines to press the green "PRERELEASE" logo onto uncut sheets of Clefable cards. However, there was a massive setup oversight.

• The Uncut Sheet Mix-up: A small handful of Base Set Raichu cards were accidentally printed on the same uncut sheet as the Jungle Clefables.
• The Foil Stamping: The machine operator loaded the foil dies and stamped the sheet, permanently branding those accidental Raichus with the green "PRERELEASE" stamp before the mistake was noticed.
• The Cover-up: Management caught the error when checking the proof sheets and destroyed the unusable Raichus. However, an estimated 8 to 11 copies were pocketed by WotC staff members as keepsakes.
