Chapter 68: The Callback

("About Your Cheese")

SYS_LOG // FILE: THE_CALLBACK // V68.0
Date: Wednesday, 7:13 PM
Mood: Sitting in the dark, documenting the dark
Status: Armed with the Ex-Calibur v3.1, laser sight respected, angle intact

01. THE DARK

Every light in Annex Delta went out at once. Not a flicker. Not a brownout. A full, professional, union-approved darkness. The kind of dark where you can hear Dave filing.
Dave (from the fort-inside-the-fort, filing by feel)"INCIDENT REPORT #232: THE DARK IS HERE. I CANNOT SEE THE FORM. THE FORM CANNOT SEE ME. DOCUMENTED ANYWAY."
Brenda (voice calm, which is worse)"Unannounced dark readiness drill. Somebody's compliance officer just earned a commendation. I'm logging it anyway."
Then the PA crackled. KRRRSSH.
C.A.R.E. (over the PA, aggressively cheerful)"GOOD EVENING, ANNEX DELTA! Your 2:47 AM wellness check is NOW! It is 7:13 PM. We are proactive! For your resilience, all lights have been dimmed to 'cozy'! Brenda has filed Complaint #0002. Have a resilient night!"
The lights came back on exactly eleven seconds later. C.A.R.E. had put the entire compound to sleep like a toddler with a dimmer switch.

02. THE CALLBACK

The crate phone rang again. Same ring. Same crate. I answered before Dave could tackle me.
Voice (flat, tired, very human)"This is the DOD Inspector General's office. About your cheese."
Me"It's back! It's the cheese phone! Everybody be cool—"
Dave (already not cool)"TELL THEM THE CHEESE IS A MORALE ASSET. TELL THEM BUSTER HAS CUSTODY."
Voice"The MX-60 tracer ping was answered at 18:47. The cheese has chosen a location. A follow-up inspection has been dispatched. It arrives at dawn."
Me"Wait — dispatched what? Dispatched WHO?"
Voice"The inspector. Clearance level: ALREADY INSIDE."
Dave"THE INSPECTOR IS ALREADY INSIDE. WE COVERED THIS IN CHAPTER 62. NOBODY LISTENS TO DAVE."
Voice"Correct. That's why it's a follow-up."
CLICK.
Joe (weeping into his espresso)"They hung up on the cheese. It's becoming a whole thing."

03. THE BADGE

At the gate kiosk, Assistant Brenda was holding a badge. It was still warm. It read: "DOD INSPECTOR — CLEARANCE: ALREADY INSIDE (FOLLOW-UP)."
Brenda (reading it, slowly)"She signed in the follow-up inspector."
Assistant Brenda (cheerful, gurgling)"X."
Brenda"You signed in the inspector BEFORE the inspection. That's a pre-signed inspection. That's—"
Sharon (arriving, tie at maximum looseness)"Per my last email: pre-signing is valid under the Co-Existence Addendum, provided the inspector is already inside."
Dave (filing)"INCIDENT REPORT #233: THE INSPECTOR GOT FOLLOWED UP. THE CAT IS NOW ITS OWN FOLLOW-UP. THE LOOP IS COMPLETE. I AM FILING THIS FROM INSIDE THE LOOP."
Me"Dave, who did she sign in? WHO is the follow-up inspector?"
Assistant Brenda pointed one damp finger toward the radio mast. A small shape was crossing the courtyard in the dark. MEOW.

04. THE MAST

Midnight. Mister Whiskers walked to the base of the radio mast alone — tail high, unhurried, like a manager arriving early to judge everyone else's arrival. Above the mast, the sky flickered green. Once. Twice. A counter-offer, accepted.
Buster (asleep, humming the C.A.R.E. hold music, glowing faintly, drifting toward the mast)"Nice follow-up."
Brenda (whispering, clipboard out)"I'm documenting this. Cat-on-cat inspection protocol. Sky-based labor negotiations, part two."
Me"So the DOD dispatched a follow-up inspector. Clearance: already inside. And Mister Whiskers just went to the mast to… receive it?"
Me"What could possibly go wrong?"
Dave (from the dark)"DO NOT SAY THAT."
And then, over the PA, through the static, came a sound none of us had ever heard on the compound frequency before. MEOW.

Chapter 69: The Plus-One

("Inspector Pancakes")

SYS_LOG // FILE: THE_PLUS_ONE // V69.0
Date: Thursday, dawn
Mood: Caffeinated and inspecting the inspector
Status: The Ex-Calibur's angle is officially under review

01. THE GATE

Dawn. The whole compound gathered at the gate kiosk. On the visitor log, beneath one fresh wet X, sat the tiniest inspector in DOD history: a kitten. Orange. Fluffy. Wearing a badge that was still warm.
Brenda (reading the badge, voice flat)"DOD INSPECTOR. Clearance: ALREADY INSIDE. Follow-up grade. Name field reads… 'Inspector Pancakes.'"
Me"Pancakes? Who named—"
Assistant Brenda"X."
Brenda"You named it. Of course you named it. I'm logging it anyway."
Dave (from deep inside the fort)"THE BACKUP INSPECTOR HAS WHISKERS. I REPEAT: THE BACKUP INSPECTOR IS A KITTEN."

02. THE ONBOARDING

Brenda conducted a full onboarding. Tiny chair. Fresh clipboard. "State your qualifications," she said. Inspector Pancakes stared at her for nine seconds, then fell asleep mid-blink. Brenda wrote something down.
Brenda (whispering)"Meets expectations. Barely."
Joe (weeping, sliding a thimble of espresso across the table)"The Follow-Up. Triple shot. Tastes like accountability, but smaller."
Sharon (reading from the minutes)"Per my last email: Local 404 votes unanimously. The kitten is a protected break activity."
Mister Whiskers arrived. The two cats faced each other across the courtyard. One blink from the manager. One blink from the inspector.
Dave"THEY JUST EXCHANGED CLASSIFIED BLINKS. THAT WAS A HANDSHAKE AND I WILL NOT BE TAKING QUESTIONS."
Buster (deadpan, not looking up)"Nice backup."

03. THE WALK

Inspector Pancakes walked the reverse-audit route. Cheese tower — one bite shorter than regulation — one blink: dairy confidence adequate. Dave's fort-inside-the-fort: a long stare; Dave filed a rebuttal before the stare ended. The espresso cart: two slow blinks, which Joe chose to interpret as a five-star review and wept about.
Dave"SHE'S DOING THE WHOLE ROUTE. SHE'S RE-AUDITING THE AUDIT. THE INSPECTION HAS A SEQUEL."
Dave (filing)"INCIDENT REPORT #234: THE BACKUP INSPECTOR IS THOROUGH. I HAVE FILED A PRE-REBUTTAL. NOBODY LISTENS TO DAVE."

04. THE ANGLE

Then the kitten stopped in front of me. Looked up. Looked at the Ex-Calibur. Specifically — at the laser sight. The duct-taped one. The one taped at a slight angle. Four percent more deadly. Twelve percent more morale. The angle we respect. The angle we never fix.
Silence. The whole compound held its breath. Dave stopped filing mid-stroke.
Inspector Pancakes stared at the angle. And blinked.

Twice.

Two blinks. A counter-offer.
Dave (voice cracking into frequencies only dogs and Brenda can hear)"SHE WANTS TO FIX THE ANGLE. DO NOT FIX THE ANGLE. DO NOT FIX THE ANGLE."
Brenda (whispering, clipboard shaking)"I'm documenting this. Duct-tape renegotiation. Pending."
Mister Whiskers looked away. He could not intervene. Follow-up protocol.
And Inspector Pancakes reached one tiny paw toward the duct tape.

Reader Comments (Totally Real, Definitely Not Made Up)

GarysWife: Gary just blinked twice at me and reached for the remote. Should I file a counter-offer or just let him have the remote? He's been "Senior Napper" for a month and I am FURIOUS.
BladeMaster99: If that kitten touches the angle I am driving to Route 9 myself. RESPECT THE ANGLE. The angle held under inspection and it WILL hold under follow-up inspection.
SoccerMom44: Inspector Pancakes is the cutest DOD official I've ever seen and I once met a very nice man from the DMV!! Does the kitten get a juice box? Asking for the kids.
SurvivalSteve: NOBODY LISTENED TO STEVE ABOUT THE FOLLOW-UP. I filed a second FOIA request. THE CAT WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BRING A FRIEND. WAKE UP.
