HOW2 WINDOWS: Turn On Storage Sense and Let Windows Clean Itself While You Sleep

Your C: drive is a junk drawer — temp files, old update leftovers, a Recycle Bin you haven't emptied since spring. Windows has a built-in housekeeper called Storage Sense that tidies all of it automatically. Most people have never turned it on. Let's fix that in two minutes.

🧹 What Storage Sense Actually Does

  • Deletes temporary files that apps leave behind and never clean up.
  • Empties the Recycle Bin on a schedule you choose — no more 40GB of "deleted" files.
  • Cleans the Downloads folder of files you haven't opened in ages (optional — turn this one on carefully).
  • Removes old Windows Update files after new updates prove stable.
  • Offloads unused OneDrive files to the cloud, keeping a placeholder on disk until you need them.

⚙️ Turn It On (60 Seconds)

  1. Open Settings → System → Storage.
  2. Flip Storage Sense to On.
  3. Click Storage Sense to open its schedule and pick your rhythm — we recommend Every week for the cleanup run.
  4. Set "Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over" to 30 days — long enough to rescue mistakes, short enough to matter.
  5. Leave Downloads-folder cleanup Off unless you're sure — that's where installers and "I'll deal with it later" files live.

🚀 Bonus: The One-Click Deep Clean

Want instant gratification? On that same Settings → System → Storage page, click Temporary files, check the boxes for the categories you don't need (Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary files, Delivery Optimization Files), and hit Remove files. Most PCs free up several gigabytes on the first run.

✅ Set It and Forget It

Storage Sense runs quietly in the background from now on — no third-party "PC cleaner" apps, no subscriptions, no sketchy registry tools. Pair it with an occasional glance at Settings → System → Storage to see what's eating your space, and your drive will never mysteriously fill up again.
