HOW2 WINDOWS: Summon the Hidden "Ultimate Performance" Power Plan

Hidden inside Windows is the Ultimate Performance power plan — a latency-killing scheme Microsoft doesn't show most users. Summon it with one command and learn when it's actually worth using.

⚡ The Power Plan Microsoft Hid From You

Buried in Windows is a power plan called Ultimate Performance — a scheme that eliminates micro-latencies by preventing your hardware from ever powering down to save energy. Microsoft hides it on most consumer PCs. Here's how to summon it in under a minute.

⌨️ Step 1: Open Terminal as Administrator

  • Right-click the Start button and choose Terminal (Admin).
  • Click Yes on the User Account Control prompt.
  • Paste this command and press Enter:
    powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61
  • Windows will confirm the new scheme with its own GUID — that's your proof it worked.

🔋 Step 2: Activate It (and Know When NOT To)

  • Open Settings → System → Power & battery (or the classic Power Options panel).
  • Select Ultimate Performance from the power mode list.
  • Use it on desktops and plugged-in workstations doing rendering, compiling, or gaming.
  • Skip it on battery power — it will drain a laptop noticeably faster and run hotter.

🧪 Step 3: Verify It's Actually Helping

  • Run your heaviest workload before and after, and watch for smoother minimum frame rates and fewer stutters.
  • Check Task Manager → Performance to confirm your CPU holds higher sustained clocks.
  • If you notice zero difference, switch back to Balanced — on modern hardware with good drivers, Balanced is already excellent.

✅ The Honest Take

Ultimate Performance won't turn a budget laptop into a workstation — but on a proper desktop, it removes the tiny power-state hiccups that cause stutters in demanding work. One command, zero cost, fully reversible. That's the best kind of tweak.
