HOW2 WINDOWS: Silence a Frozen App in 5 Seconds

One app freezes and suddenly your whole PC feels broken. You don't need to reboot — here's how to kill just the offender in seconds.

The ladder: escalate, don't nuke

A "Not Responding" app is usually one stuck process, not a dying computer. Restarting the whole PC loses unsaved work in every app — so work up this ladder, cheapest weapon first, and stop at the first one that works.

The 5-second kill ladder

  1. Alt + Tab to it, then Alt + F4. Make sure the frozen window is focused (Alt+Tab cycles to it), then press Alt+F4. The polite way to ask Windows to close it.
  2. Ctrl + Shift + Esc → End Task. This shortcut opens Task Manager directly — no menus. Find the frozen app under Processes, click it, then End task.
  3. Ctrl + Alt + Del → Task Manager. If Task Manager itself won't open with the shortcut, the security screen almost always will. Choose Task Manager and end the process.
  4. The taskkill command. Press Win+R, type cmd, and run:
    taskkill /im notepad.exe /f
Swap in the app's process name (chrome.exe, winword.exe...). The /f flag force-kills it. Find exact names in Task Manager's Details tab.
  5. Restart — the last resort. If the whole screen is locked and even Ctrl+Alt+Del fails, hold the power button. This is the only step that touches unsaved work elsewhere.

Which weapon when?

Situation Use this Why
App shows "(Not Responding)" Alt+F4 Fastest, lets app attempt a clean close
Alt+F4 ignored Ctrl+Shift+Esc → End task Windows-level kill, ~5 seconds
Task Manager won't open Ctrl+Alt+Del screen Bypasses stuck shell
Same app freezes daily taskkill + update/reinstall Recurring freezes need a fix, not a kill

Stop the freezes before they start

If freezes keep coming back, the problem is deeper than one app. Learn to restart your graphics driver with one shortcut (fixes display-level hangs), check what's eating your disk space (a full drive freezes everything), and set up clipboard history so you never lose copied work to a crashed app.

The takeaway

  • One frozen app ≠ a frozen PC. Kill the process, not the machine.
  • Alt+F4 → Ctrl+Shift+Esc → taskkill: escalate only as far as needed.
  • Recurring freezes are a symptom — update or reinstall the app.

Which app freezes on you the most — and did the taskkill command finally retire it?
