HOW2 WINDOWS: Fix Blurry Apps on Your Sharp Display With the High-DPI Override

You bought a gorgeous high-resolution monitor, and one stubborn old app looks like it was rendered through a foggy window. The fix isn't a new monitor — it's a hidden per-app scaling setting Windows has had for years.

🔍 Why It Happens

Older desktop apps were built before high-DPI displays existed. When Windows scales them up to match your 4K (or scaled 1440p) display, some apps don't know how to redraw themselves crisply — so Windows stretches them like a low-res photo. The result: one blurry app in a sea of sharp ones.

🛠️ The 60-Second Fix (Per App)

  1. Find the app's shortcut or .exe file, right-click it, and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Compatibility tab and click Change high DPI settings.
  3. Check "Override high DPI scaling behavior".
  4. In the dropdown, pick System (Enhanced) first — for most apps this is the crispest option. Click OK, restart the app.

Still fuzzy? Try Application (lets the app handle its own scaling) or System (Windows scales it, but cleanly). One of the three almost always wins — test each with a quick app restart.

🧪 The Global Tweak (If Everything Looks Off)

  • Go to Settings → System → Display and check your Scale setting — 100%, 125%, and 150% are the "safe" values; odd values like 137% cause more blur.
  • Under Advanced scaling settings, make sure "Let Windows try to fix apps so they're not blurry" is turned on.
  • After changing scaling, sign out and back in (not just a restart of the app) — Windows applies display scaling cleanly at sign-in.

✅ Quick Recap

  • Blurry app → right-click → Properties → Compatibility → Change high DPI settings → Override → System (Enhanced).
  • Test all three override modes; the best one varies by app.
  • Keep display scaling at 100/125/150% and let Windows auto-fix blur globally.
