iPhone NameDrop Guide: Share Contacts Safely
Hold two iPhones close and your contact card glides across like magic. NameDrop is genuinely delightful — and worth setting up properly, so you share exactly what you mean to, with exactly whom you mean to.
How NameDrop Actually Works
NameDrop, part of AirDrop, lets two iPhones (or an iPhone and Apple Watch) exchange contact cards when held close together. Crucially, it only shares when both devices are unlocked and close, and you choose whether to share or just receive before anything is sent. It does not broadcast your details to strangers across a room.
Set Up Your Card Before You Share It
- Open Contacts, tap your own card, and check the photo, name, and poster look right.
- Decide which phone number and email belong on the shared card — work details do not have to travel with personal ones.
- Use the fields control when sharing to include only the details this person needs.
NameDrop pairs beautifully with our iPhone Live Voicemail guide: one screens who is calling, the other controls what you hand over when you meet.
Share in Three Moves
- Hold the top of your unlocked iPhone near the top of theirs.
- Wait for the glow and your contact poster to appear.
- Tap Share (or Receive Only if you just want theirs), and confirm the fields.
Changed your mind mid-share? Move the phones apart before it completes and the transfer cancels.
Privacy Controls in 20 Seconds
Go to Settings, General, AirDrop. Under 'Bringing Devices Together' you can turn proximity sharing off entirely. You can also set AirDrop receiving to Contacts Only, which is the setting most people should live on. NameDrop shares only your contact card — never photos, passwords, or anything else on the phone.
The Wizard's Wrap-Up
Set the card once, share deliberately, and NameDrop becomes the fastest business card you have ever owned — without the shoebox of paper cards at home.
Would you rather NameDrop your details or go back to dictating your number digit by digit?
