iPhone Focus Filters: Silence Apps by Scene
Focus modes mute people — Focus Filters mute the apps themselves. One setting change turns your work inbox invisible at 6 PM and your social apps invisible at 9 AM.
What Focus Filters actually do
A Focus Filter tells a specific app to show different content depending on which Focus is on. Mail can show only your personal inbox in Personal Focus and only work accounts in Work Focus. Safari can open only your work tab groups. Messages can show only conversations with people allowed in that Focus.
Find them at Settings → Focus → [choose a Focus] → Focus Filters → Add Filter. It takes two minutes per app and changes how your whole phone feels.
The 3 scenes worth building first
- Work: Mail shows work accounts only; Calendar shows work calendars; Slack/Teams allowed, social apps filtered out of notifications.
- Personal: Work Mail and Calendar accounts hidden — truly hidden, not just muted.
- Sleep: Safari limited to a calm tab group, Messages filtered to family, everything else quiet. Pair with our iPhone NameDrop safety guide so sharing stays intentional too.
Step-by-step: your first filter
- Open Settings → Focus → Personal.
- Scroll to Focus Filters and tap Add Filter.
- Choose Mail, then select only your personal accounts.
- Repeat for Calendar — personal calendars only.
- Turn Personal Focus on from Control Center and open Mail: work is simply not there.
That last moment — work genuinely absent instead of begging for attention — is the whole trick.
Automation makes it effortless
Set each Focus to turn on by schedule or location: Work at the office or 9–5, Personal at home in the evening, Sleep at bedtime. Add Focus status sharing so close contacts know replies will wait. If notifications still feel noisy, our macOS shortcuts roundup covers the Mac side of the same calm system.
Try it tonight
Build just the Personal filter for Mail tonight. Tomorrow evening, notice what does not follow you home. Then add Calendar. Small filters, compounding calm.
Question for you: Which app would you banish from your evenings first?
